Von Willebrand Disease
Von Willebrand disease is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by reduced amounts or abnormal function of von Willebrand factor, a protein that helps blood clot properly. People with the condition may bruise easily or experience prolonged nosebleeds, bleeding after injuries, or excessive bleeding after surgery or dental procedures. Menstrual bleeding may also be unusually heavy or prolonged. Severity varies considerably among the different types of the disorder.

Diagnosis can be challenging because von Willebrand factor levels and bleeding symptoms can vary over time. Testing may measure von Willebrand factor amount and activity, factor VIII levels, platelet function, and related clotting measures.
