Overview
Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when the body does not have enough vitamin B12 to support normal red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA production. It may develop gradually and can cause tiredness, weakness, pale skin, numbness, tingling, balance problems, or changes in concentration and memory. Severe or prolonged deficiency can cause nerve damage.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormone than the body needs. The excess hormone can increase metabolism and cause symptoms such as rapid or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, sweating, heat intolerance, weight loss, tremor, and difficulty sleeping. Some people have few noticeable symptoms, while severe untreated disease can cause serious complications.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Diagnosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and blood testing. A complete blood count may show anemia or enlarged red blood cells, while a serum vitamin B12 measurement can help assess deficiency. Additional tests such as methylmalonic acid, homocysteine, folate, or tests for pernicious anemia may be used when the diagnosis is uncertain or the cause needs clarification.
Hyperthyroidism
Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism usually begins with a medical history and physical examination followed by thyroid blood tests. A low thyroid-stimulating hormone level with elevated thyroid hormone levels supports the diagnosis. Additional testing may include thyroid antibody tests, radioactive iodine uptake studies, or thyroid ultrasound to identify the cause. The choice of testing depends on symptoms, examination findings, and the suspected underlying disorder.
Prevention
Vitamin B12 Deficiency
A balanced diet containing reliable sources of vitamin B12 can help prevent nutritional deficiency. People who follow a strict vegan diet may need fortified foods or a vitamin B12 supplement. Individuals with conditions or medicines that reduce B12 absorption may require periodic monitoring and supplementation under medical guidance. Early evaluation of unexplained anemia or neurological symptoms can prevent prolonged deficiency.
Hyperthyroidism
Some causes of hyperthyroidism cannot be prevented. Avoiding unnecessary excessive iodine exposure and taking thyroid medicines only as prescribed may reduce preventable causes. People with thyroid disease should attend recommended follow-up appointments and report new symptoms such as persistent palpitations, unexplained weight loss, tremor, or heat intolerance. Appropriate treatment of the underlying thyroid disorder can help prevent complications.
Risk Factors
Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Risk factors include a diet low in vitamin B12, strict vegan diets without supplementation, pernicious anemia, disorders affecting the stomach or small intestine, previous gastrointestinal surgery, and prolonged use of certain medicines that interfere with absorption. Older adults may also have impaired absorption. Alcohol misuse and some chronic gastrointestinal conditions can further increase risk.
Hyperthyroidism
Risk factors for hyperthyroidism depend on the underlying cause. Graves disease is more common in people with a family history of thyroid or autoimmune disorders and may be associated with other autoimmune conditions. Older age increases the likelihood of toxic thyroid nodules. Excess iodine exposure and certain medicines can also trigger thyroid overactivity in susceptible individuals.
