Overview

Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease in which inflammation and ulcers develop in the lining of the rectum and colon. Symptoms commonly include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, and blood or pus in the stool. Symptoms may range from mild to severe and often occur in periods of flares followed by remission. The disease can occur at any age but commonly begins during adolescence or early adulthood.
Legionnaires Disease
Legionnaires disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Infection usually occurs when a person breathes contaminated water droplets or mist from systems in which the bacteria have multiplied. Symptoms can include fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue, and some people may also develop gastrointestinal symptoms. The illness can become severe, particularly in older adults and people with chronic diseases or weakened immune systems.

Diagnosis

Ulcerative Colitis
Diagnosis involves a medical history, physical examination, blood tests, stool tests, and examination of the colon. Colonoscopy with biopsy is commonly used to confirm the diagnosis and determine how much of the colon is affected. Tests such as complete blood count, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and stool calprotectin or lactoferrin can help assess inflammation. Imaging or additional endoscopic tests may be used when needed to distinguish ulcerative colitis from other conditions.
Legionnaires Disease
Diagnosis generally involves evaluation of pneumonia together with testing specifically directed at Legionella when the clinical situation warrants it. Chest imaging can demonstrate pneumonia, while laboratory testing may include a urinary antigen test and testing of respiratory specimens by culture or molecular methods. The choice of testing depends on illness severity, exposure history, local public health considerations, and whether an outbreak or healthcare-associated exposure is suspected.

Prevention

Ulcerative Colitis
There is no known way to reliably prevent ulcerative colitis because its exact cause is not fully understood. Following medical advice, avoiding known personal triggers, not smoking, and maintaining regular medical care can help manage the condition and reduce complications.
Legionnaires Disease
Prevention focuses on controlling Legionella growth in water systems. Building owners and facility managers should maintain and disinfect plumbing systems, cooling equipment, hot tubs, and other water systems according to appropriate safety procedures. Avoiding conditions that allow stagnant water and bacterial growth can reduce contamination. During recognized outbreaks or exposures, people at increased risk should follow public health recommendations. Healthcare facilities and long-term care settings should maintain appropriate water-management programs.

Risk Factors

Ulcerative Colitis
Risk factors include having a family history of ulcerative colitis or other autoimmune diseases. The condition can occur at any age, with common periods of onset during adolescence and early adulthood and another peak later in life. Genetic susceptibility and other environmental or immune factors are thought to contribute. A person can develop ulcerative colitis even without a known family history.
Legionnaires Disease
Risk is higher in people over 50 years of age, current or former smokers, and people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, or weakened immunity. Recent hospitalization and residence in long-term care facilities can increase exposure opportunities. The risk of disease is also influenced by exposure to contaminated water systems, cooling equipment, hot tubs, or other environments where Legionella bacteria can multiply.
