Overview

Thyroiditis
Thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland. Different forms can cause temporary release of thyroid hormones followed by low thyroid hormone levels, while other forms may cause persistent changes in thyroid function. Symptoms therefore vary and may include neck pain or tenderness, fatigue, changes in heart rate, heat or cold intolerance, weight changes, or symptoms of an underactive thyroid.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. It commonly develops after a respiratory infection and may cause cough, mucus production, chest discomfort, tiredness, and sometimes wheezing. Acute bronchitis usually improves as the infection clears, while persistent or recurrent symptoms may require evaluation for another underlying lung condition.

Diagnosis

Thyroiditis
Diagnosis begins with symptoms, medical history, and examination of the thyroid gland. Blood tests can measure thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid hormone levels and may include tests for thyroid antibodies. Depending on the suspected type, a healthcare provider may use an ultrasound or other thyroid imaging and, in selected cases, tests of thyroid hormone uptake. The pattern of thyroid function over time can help distinguish different forms of thyroiditis.
Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is usually diagnosed from the history of illness and a physical examination. A healthcare professional may assess the cough, breathing, chest sounds, fever, and other symptoms. Tests are not routinely needed when the presentation is typical. Chest imaging or other testing may be considered when pneumonia, asthma, chronic lung disease, or another condition is suspected, particularly when symptoms are severe, prolonged, or atypical.

Prevention

Thyroiditis
Thyroiditis cannot always be prevented because many forms are related to autoimmune processes, viral illnesses, or other factors that cannot be controlled. Appropriate management of underlying autoimmune or medical conditions and review of medicines that may affect the thyroid can help reduce complications. People who develop persistent symptoms of abnormal thyroid function should seek medical evaluation and follow recommended monitoring.
Bronchitis
Reducing exposure to tobacco smoke, secondhand smoke, air pollution, dust, and chemical fumes can help protect the airways. Hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with people who have respiratory infections may reduce exposure to viruses. Staying appropriately vaccinated against respiratory infections can also reduce some causes of illness. People with persistent cough, breathing difficulty, recurrent bronchitis, or concerning symptoms should seek medical evaluation.

Risk Factors

Thyroiditis
Risk factors depend on the type of thyroiditis. A recent viral illness may precede subacute thyroiditis, while autoimmune thyroid disorders are associated with other immune-related conditions and family history. Postpartum thyroiditis can occur after pregnancy. Some medicines and treatments can also affect the thyroid and contribute to inflammation or changes in thyroid function.
Bronchitis
Risk factors include recent respiratory infection, exposure to tobacco smoke, air pollution, dust, chemical fumes, and other airway irritants. People with asthma or other chronic lung conditions may experience more prolonged or severe respiratory symptoms. Older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems may also have greater risk of complications. Repeated occupational exposure to airborne irritants can contribute to recurrent bronchial inflammation.
