Overview
Thyroid Nodule
A thyroid nodule is a growth or lump within the thyroid gland, which is located at the front of the neck. Thyroid nodules are common and may occur as a single growth or as several nodules. Most are benign rather than cancerous. Some nodules contain fluid, while others are solid, and a small number produce excess thyroid hormones.
Boils
A boil is a painful, pus-filled lump caused by an infection involving a hair follicle and nearby skin tissue. It may start as a tender, swollen area and enlarge as pus builds up. Several nearby boils can join to form a carbuncle.

Thyroid Nodule
A thyroid nodule is usually evaluated with a physical examination and thyroid tests. Ultrasound can show the size and characteristics of the nodule and help determine whether further evaluation is needed. Depending on the findings, a healthcare provider may recommend a thyroid scan, blood tests, or fine-needle aspiration to obtain cells for examination and determine whether the nodule is benign or cancerous.
Boils
A healthcare professional can usually identify a boil by examining its appearance and asking about symptoms and previous episodes. A sample of fluid or pus may be cultured to identify the organism. Recurrent boils or signs of a wider infection may warrant further evaluation.
Prevention
Thyroid Nodule
There is no reliable way to prevent most thyroid nodules because their exact causes are often unknown. Maintaining adequate iodine intake can help prevent thyroid problems related to iodine deficiency. People with known thyroid disease or risk factors such as previous neck radiation should follow recommended medical evaluation. New or enlarging neck lumps should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Boils
Regular handwashing, keeping skin clean, and keeping cuts clean and covered can reduce infection risk and spread. Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or razors. Cover draining areas with a clean dressing and wash hands after contact. These measures reduce risk but cannot prevent every boil.
Risk Factors
Thyroid Nodule
The chance of developing a thyroid nodule increases with age, and nodules are more common in women. Factors that may raise concern for thyroid cancer include radiation exposure to the head or neck, a family history of thyroid cancer, a hard or fixed nodule, certain voice changes, and being very young or older in age. Male sex is also associated with a higher likelihood of malignancy.
Boils
Boils may be more likely with diabetes, conditions that weaken the immune system, certain skin conditions such as eczema, obesity, or close contact with someone who has boils. These factors affect susceptibility or exposure; a boil is not, by itself, evidence of poor personal hygiene.
