Overview

Tendinitis
Tendinitis is a condition involving irritation or structural changes in a tendon, the strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. It commonly affects tendons subjected to repetitive loading, including those around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, or ankle. Symptoms usually include localized pain, tenderness, and discomfort that may worsen with movement or activity. The condition can develop gradually after repeated use or sometimes follow a sudden increase in physical demand.
Athletes Foot
Athletes foot is a common fungal infection affecting the skin of the feet. It often causes itching, burning, redness, scaling and cracking, especially between the toes. The infection can spread to the soles or sides of the feet and may sometimes affect the toenails. It thrives in warm, damp environments and can spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

Diagnosis

Tendinitis
Diagnosis is generally based on the location and pattern of pain, the activities that provoke symptoms, and physical examination. The affected tendon may be tender and pain may be reproduced with resisted movement or stretching. Imaging is not always necessary for straightforward cases. Ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging may be considered when symptoms persist, the diagnosis is uncertain, or a significant tendon injury or alternative condition is suspected.
Athletes Foot
Athletes foot is often diagnosed by examining the affected skin and recognizing its typical appearance. A healthcare professional may take a small skin scraping for microscopic examination or laboratory testing when the diagnosis is uncertain, the infection is severe or another skin condition could look similar. Nail involvement may require additional testing.

Prevention

Tendinitis
Gradual increases in physical workload, adequate recovery, appropriate conditioning, and good technique can reduce excessive tendon stress. Repetitive activities should include suitable rest periods, particularly when performed for long periods. Strengthening and flexibility programs may help prepare the muscles and tendons for activity. Persistent pain should not simply be ignored or repeatedly aggravated, as early evaluation can help identify contributing factors and prevent worsening.
Athletes Foot
Keep the feet clean and dry, especially between the toes. Change socks regularly and allow shoes to dry completely before wearing them again. Choose footwear that allows air circulation and avoid sharing shoes, socks or towels. Wear sandals or other protective footwear in communal showers, locker rooms and pool areas. Treating an infection promptly can also reduce spread to other people or body areas.

Risk Factors

Tendinitis
Risk increases with repetitive physical activity, sudden increases in workload, insufficient recovery, and activities requiring repeated forceful movement. Sports, manual occupations, prolonged computer or tool use, and other repetitive tasks can increase tendon loading depending on the affected body region. Age-related tendon changes, reduced muscle conditioning, previous tendon problems, and poor movement mechanics may also contribute. The relevant risk factors differ according to the tendon involved.
Athletes Foot
Risk increases when the feet remain warm and moist for long periods. Wearing tight or poorly ventilated shoes, sweating heavily, walking barefoot in communal areas and sharing towels or footwear can increase exposure. People who have had athletes foot before may develop it again. Certain medical conditions or treatments that weaken immune defenses may also increase susceptibility.
