Overview
Synovitis
Synovitis is inflammation of the synovial lining of a joint, which can cause swelling, pain, warmth, stiffness, and reduced movement. It may develop after an injury or repeated joint stress, or as part of infection, autoimmune arthritis, crystal disease, or another inflammatory condition. Treatment and evaluation depend on the underlying cause.
Ovarian Cyst
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac or other tissue-filled structure that develops in or on an ovary. Many ovarian cysts are functional, occur as part of the normal menstrual cycle, and disappear without treatment. Others may develop because of conditions such as endometriosis or abnormal cell growth. Small cysts may cause no symptoms, while larger or complicated cysts can cause pelvic pain, pressure, bloating, or menstrual changes. Rarely, a cyst can rupture, bleed, or cause the ovary to twist.

Synovitis
Diagnosis of synovitis is based on symptoms and examination of the affected joint, including assessment of swelling, warmth, tenderness, stiffness, and movement. Imaging such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI may help identify structural or inflammatory changes. Blood tests may be useful when an inflammatory disease is suspected. Joint-fluid analysis may be performed when infection or crystal disease needs to be investigated.
Ovarian Cyst
Ovarian cysts are commonly evaluated with a pelvic examination and ultrasound. Transvaginal ultrasound can show the size, location, and appearance of a cyst and help distinguish simple fluid-filled cysts from more complex structures. Pregnancy testing may be appropriate in people who could be pregnant. Blood tests or additional imaging may be recommended depending on age, symptoms, and ultrasound findings. In some cases, follow-up imaging is used to determine whether a cyst resolves over time.
Prevention
Synovitis
Prevention of synovitis depends on its underlying cause. Protecting joints from repetitive strain, using appropriate techniques during physical activity, and allowing adequate recovery after strenuous activity may reduce irritation. Prompt and appropriate treatment of joint injuries and infections can also help. People with inflammatory or metabolic conditions should follow their treatment plans and maintain healthy activity levels.
Ovarian Cyst
Most ovarian cysts cannot be prevented because many develop as part of normal ovarian function. Regular medical care can help identify persistent or recurrent cysts and conditions such as endometriosis that may contribute to cyst formation. People receiving fertility medicines should follow monitoring recommendations. New or severe pelvic pain should be evaluated promptly, especially when accompanied by vomiting, fainting, or sudden symptoms that could indicate rupture or ovarian torsion.
Risk Factors
Synovitis
Risk depends on the underlying cause of synovitis. Repetitive joint stress, previous joint injuries, inflammatory arthritis, infection, crystal disease, and some metabolic disorders can increase the likelihood of inflammation. People with conditions that affect the joints or immune system may therefore have a greater risk, while the specific risk factors vary according to the type and cause of synovitis.
Ovarian Cyst
Risk factors for ovarian cysts include being of reproductive age, having irregular menstrual cycles, certain hormonal treatments, pregnancy, endometriosis, and previous ovarian cysts. Some fertility treatments can increase the likelihood of developing ovarian cysts. The risk and significance depend on the type of cyst. After menopause, ovarian cysts are less common but may require more careful evaluation because the likelihood of a concerning underlying condition changes with age.
