Overview

Substance Use Disorder
Substance use disorder is a medical condition involving continued use of alcohol or drugs despite harmful effects or difficulty controlling use. It can affect health, relationships, work, and daily functioning. The disorder may involve craving, loss of control, increasing tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, or repeated unsuccessful attempts to reduce or stop use.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis occurs when spaces within the spine become narrowed and place pressure on the spinal cord or nearby nerves. It most often develops gradually because of age-related changes such as arthritis, thickened ligaments, or enlargement of spinal joints. Some people have no symptoms, while others develop back or neck pain, numbness, weakness, or pain that travels into the arms or legs. Symptoms may become worse with standing or walking and improve with sitting or bending forward.

Diagnosis

Substance Use Disorder
Diagnosis is based on a clinical assessment of substance use and its effects on health and daily functioning. Healthcare professionals consider patterns of use, inability to control use, craving, continued use despite harm, tolerance, withdrawal, and related problems. Screening questionnaires and assessment for medical or psychiatric complications may also be used.
Spinal Stenosis
Diagnosis of spinal stenosis begins with a history and neurological examination assessing pain, sensation, strength, reflexes, and walking ability. Imaging is used when symptoms suggest significant narrowing or nerve compression. MRI can show the spinal cord, nerve roots, discs, and soft tissues, while CT can provide detailed information about bone structures. X-rays may identify alignment or degenerative changes. Imaging findings must be interpreted together with symptoms because narrowing can be present without causing clinical problems.

Prevention

Substance Use Disorder
Substance use disorder cannot always be prevented, but risk may be reduced by delaying or avoiding harmful substance use, using prescribed medicines only as directed, building healthy coping strategies, and addressing stress or trauma appropriately. Early recognition of problematic use and timely professional support can help prevent progression and reduce complications.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis cannot always be prevented because aging and inherited anatomy play important roles. Maintaining regular physical activity, healthy body weight, and good muscle strength can support spinal function. Safe lifting techniques and appropriate management of injuries may reduce additional strain. Treating conditions such as osteoarthritis and maintaining mobility can help preserve function. People with persistent back pain, weakness, numbness, walking difficulty, or changes in bladder or bowel function should seek medical assessment.

Risk Factors

Substance Use Disorder
Risk factors include family history of substance use disorder, early exposure to alcohol or drugs, trauma, chronic stress, certain mental health conditions, social environments where substance use is common, and easy access to addictive substances. Risk varies according to the substance, pattern of use, individual vulnerability, and social circumstances.
Spinal Stenosis
Risk factors for spinal stenosis include increasing age, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, previous spinal injury or surgery, certain congenital spinal conditions, and disorders affecting bone or connective tissue. Excessive mechanical stress may contribute to degenerative changes. Symptoms are more common when structural narrowing becomes significant enough to affect nerves. Having spinal narrowing on an imaging study does not always mean a person will have symptoms.
