Overview
Specific Phobia
Specific phobia is an anxiety disorder involving an intense and persistent fear of a particular object, situation, or activity. The fear is excessive in relation to the actual danger and commonly leads a person to avoid the feared situation. Examples include fears of animals, heights, flying, injections, blood, storms, or enclosed spaces.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Chronic low back pain is persistent pain in the lower back that continues for several months or longer. It may result from problems involving the discs, joints, muscles, or other structures of the spine. Pain may remain localized to the lower back or sometimes extend into the buttocks or legs, depending on the underlying cause.

Specific Phobia
Specific phobia is diagnosed through a clinical interview and assessment of symptoms. A healthcare professional considers whether the fear is persistent, excessive, causes significant distress or impairment, and leads to avoidance. The clinician also considers whether another mental health condition or medical problem better explains the symptoms.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Diagnosis of chronic low back pain is based primarily on the medical history and physical examination. The clinician assesses the location and duration of pain, movement, strength, sensation, and other symptoms that may suggest a particular cause. Imaging such as X-rays or MRI may be used when clinically necessary, particularly when symptoms are persistent, severe, or associated with concerning findings.
Prevention
Specific Phobia
Specific phobia cannot always be prevented. Supportive childhood environments, healthy coping skills, early attention to persistent anxiety, and professional help after traumatic experiences may reduce the impact of fear and avoidance. Early treatment can also help prevent a phobia from becoming more disruptive to daily life.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Some episodes of chronic low back pain cannot be prevented, but regular physical activity can help maintain strength and flexibility. Maintaining a healthy weight may reduce strain on the back. Use safe lifting techniques by bending at the knees, keeping objects close to the body, and avoiding twisting while lifting. Avoid smoking and use supportive sitting and working positions when possible.
Risk Factors
Specific Phobia
Risk factors for specific phobia may include a family history of anxiety disorders or phobias, a highly sensitive or anxious temperament, traumatic experiences, stressful childhood experiences, and learning fear responses from others. The disorder can begin during childhood or adolescence but may develop at any age.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Risk factors for chronic low back pain include previous back injury, repeated physical strain, poor posture, and activities that place repeated stress on the spine. Physical inactivity or weak back and abdominal muscles may contribute. Increasing age, certain spinal conditions, excess body weight, and some chronic illnesses can also increase the likelihood that back pain will persist.
