Overview

Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety disorder is a persistent fear of situations in which a person may be observed, evaluated, or judged by others. It is more than ordinary shyness because the fear can substantially interfere with work, education, relationships, and routine activities. People may worry extensively before social situations and may avoid them altogether. Physical symptoms can include sweating, trembling, nausea, blushing, difficulty speaking, and a strong sense of self-consciousness.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone is a chronic disorder in which the normal process of bone breakdown and rebuilding becomes abnormal. Affected bones may become enlarged, misshapen, weaker, and more prone to fracture. The disease often affects one or a few bones and may cause no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include bone pain, arthritis, hearing problems, or deformity depending on the bones involved.

Diagnosis

Social Anxiety Disorder
Diagnosis is based on the pattern and severity of social fear, avoidance, and interference with everyday functioning. A clinician asks about situations that trigger anxiety, the person’s thoughts and physical symptoms, avoidance behavior, duration of symptoms, and effects on work, school, and relationships. Information from family members or other trusted people may sometimes help describe the behavior. The clinician also considers other anxiety disorders, depression, substance use, and medical conditions that may produce similar symptoms.
Paget Disease of Bone
Diagnosis may involve a medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging. An elevated alkaline phosphatase level can provide evidence of increased bone activity. X-rays are commonly used to identify characteristic changes in affected bones, while a bone scan can show which areas are involved. Additional imaging or biopsy may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or another bone disorder must be excluded.

Prevention

Social Anxiety Disorder
There is no guaranteed method for preventing social anxiety disorder. Early recognition of persistent social fear and avoidance can allow treatment before the problem becomes more disabling. Maintaining supportive relationships and gradually engaging in appropriate social activities may help build confidence and coping skills. People who notice that anxiety is causing significant avoidance or interfering with education, employment, or relationships should seek professional assessment rather than relying on alcohol or other substances to manage social situations.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone cannot currently be prevented because its underlying causes are not completely understood. Early detection and appropriate medical management can reduce the risk of complications in people who develop the condition. Maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake when appropriate, staying physically active within safe limits, and avoiding excessive stress on affected bones can support overall bone health. Exercise plans should be discussed with a healthcare professional when bones are weakened or deformed.

Risk Factors

Social Anxiety Disorder
Risk may be influenced by family history, temperament, previous negative social experiences, limited opportunities for social interaction, and certain environmental circumstances. The disorder often begins during the teenage years, although symptoms can occur at other ages. People with severe social anxiety may avoid situations that could otherwise provide education, employment, relationships, or social support. Some affected individuals may also develop problematic use of alcohol or other substances in attempts to reduce anxiety.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone is more common with increasing age and is more frequently reported in people of certain European ancestry. Having a close family member with Paget disease increases the likelihood of developing the condition. The disease can occur without a known family history, and many affected people have no obvious symptoms when it is first discovered.
