Overview
Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is a group of cancers that begin in cells of the skin. The major types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Skin cancers may appear as a new or changing growth, sore, patch, or lesion. Early evaluation of suspicious skin changes can help identify cancer before it becomes more advanced.
Epididymitis
Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm from the testicle toward the vas deferens. It commonly causes pain and swelling in the scrotum and may also cause urinary symptoms or fever. Infection is the most common cause, although medicines and other conditions can occasionally contribute.

InfectionDiagnosis
Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is usually evaluated through a skin examination followed by biopsy of a suspicious lesion. The biopsy allows a pathologist to determine the type of cancer and its characteristics. Additional imaging or lymph-node evaluation may be recommended for selected cancers when there is concern about deeper invasion or spread.
Epididymitis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and physical examination, including assessment of the scrotum and testicles. Urine and blood tests may be used to identify infection, and testing for sexually transmitted infections may be appropriate. Ultrasound may be used when necessary, particularly to help distinguish epididymitis from other causes of acute scrotal pain.
Prevention
Skin Cancer
Regular protection from ultraviolet radiation can reduce skin cancer risk. Measures include seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and a broad-brimmed hat, using broad-spectrum sunscreen appropriately, avoiding tanning beds, and limiting intense sun exposure. Regular awareness of new or changing skin lesions can also support early detection.
Epididymitis
Safer sexual practices, including appropriate condom use, can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections that cause epididymitis. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of urinary or sexually transmitted infections can reduce complications. People with urinary tract abnormalities or recurrent infections should follow appropriate medical management and seek evaluation for persistent urinary or scrotal symptoms.
Risk Factors
Skin Cancer
Risk factors vary by skin cancer type but include cumulative ultraviolet exposure, frequent sunburns, tanning-bed use, fair skin, light eyes or hair, a history of previous skin cancer, increasing age, certain inherited conditions, chronic immune suppression, and exposure to particular radiation or chemicals.
Epididymitis
Risk increases with unprotected sexual activity and sexually transmitted infections, urinary tract infections, prostate or urinary tract abnormalities, recent urinary procedures, and regular use of a urinary catheter. Previous urinary tract surgery or structural problems may also increase risk.
