Overview

Septic Arthritis
Septic arthritis is a serious infection of a joint caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other microorganisms. The infection can cause sudden joint pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and difficulty moving the affected joint. Septic arthritis requires prompt medical evaluation and treatment because infection can rapidly damage cartilage and other joint structures.
Carbuncle
A carbuncle is a group of interconnected boils caused by a deeper bacterial infection of the skin and tissues around several hair follicles. The area is usually painful, swollen, red, and filled with pus, and several openings may develop as the infection drains. Carbuncles commonly occur on the back, neck, thighs, or other areas where friction and sweating may occur.

Diagnosis

Septic Arthritis
Septic arthritis is diagnosed urgently using symptoms, physical examination, blood tests, imaging when appropriate, and analysis of joint fluid. A needle may be used to remove fluid from the affected joint for laboratory testing, including examination for microorganisms and inflammatory cells. Blood cultures may also help identify an infection that has entered the bloodstream.
Carbuncle
Diagnosis is usually based on the appearance of the affected skin and the symptoms. A healthcare professional may examine the size, depth, drainage, and surrounding redness of the infection. A sample of pus may be collected for bacterial culture when the infection is severe, recurrent, unusually located, or not responding to initial treatment. Additional assessment may be needed when an underlying condition such as diabetes is suspected.

Prevention

Septic Arthritis
There is no guaranteed way to prevent septic arthritis, but prompt treatment of skin and other infections, good wound care, appropriate management of chronic illnesses, and proper care around joint surgery can reduce risk. People with artificial joints or weakened immunity should seek prompt medical attention for symptoms of infection.
Carbuncle
Good skin hygiene can help reduce the spread of bacteria that cause carbuncles. Keep wounds clean and covered, wash hands regularly, and avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or other personal items with someone who has a skin infection. Managing diabetes and other chronic conditions can also reduce susceptibility. Recurrent infections should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to identify contributing factors.

Risk Factors

Septic Arthritis
Risk factors for septic arthritis include an artificial joint, recent joint surgery, injection drug use, bloodstream infection, weakened immunity, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and other chronic illnesses. Older age and existing joint damage can also increase susceptibility. Any condition that allows microorganisms to enter the bloodstream can potentially contribute.
Carbuncle
Diabetes and other conditions that weaken the immune system can increase the risk of developing carbuncles. Poor skin hygiene, repeated friction, sweating, and skin injuries may also contribute. People living in crowded conditions or those who have close contact with someone carrying the bacteria may have greater exposure. A history of recurrent skin infections can also increase susceptibility.
