Overview
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition that usually affects areas rich in oil glands, including the scalp, face, eyebrows, ears, and upper chest. It may cause flaky or greasy scales, redness, itching, or irritation. Dandruff is a mild form affecting the scalp. Symptoms can come and go and may become more noticeable during periods of stress, illness, or environmental changes.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that becomes more common with aging. An enlarged prostate can press on the urethra and interfere with the normal flow of urine. Symptoms may include difficulty starting urination, a weak or interrupted stream, frequent or urgent urination, nighttime urination, and a feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely.

Diagnosis
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is usually diagnosed clinically from the characteristic appearance and distribution of affected skin. A healthcare professional examines areas such as the scalp, face, ears, eyebrows, and chest and reviews the pattern of symptoms. Laboratory testing is generally unnecessary. When the appearance is unusual or another skin condition is suspected, additional examination or testing may be used to clarify the diagnosis.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Diagnosis is based on urinary symptoms, medical history, and physical examination, including a digital rectal examination when appropriate. Urinalysis can help exclude infection or other causes of urinary symptoms. Depending on the situation, tests may include prostate-specific antigen measurement, urinary flow testing, measurement of urine remaining after urination, or imaging of the prostate and urinary tract.
Prevention
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis cannot always be prevented because individual susceptibility and skin biology contribute to its development. Regular gentle cleansing and appropriate scalp care can help control symptoms. Avoiding known personal triggers and following an established treatment plan can reduce flare-ups. Stress management and treatment of associated medical conditions may also be helpful for people who experience recurrent or persistent symptoms.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
There is no guaranteed way to prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia because prostate enlargement is strongly related to aging. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, managing diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors, and limiting excessive fluid intake before bedtime may help reduce urinary symptoms. People with persistent or worsening urinary symptoms should be evaluated so that other causes can be excluded and appropriate treatment considered.
Risk Factors
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Risk factors include personal or family tendency toward seborrheic dermatitis, oily skin, stress, cold or dry weather, and certain neurological or immune-related conditions. The condition is also more common in some adults with Parkinson disease or other neurological disorders and in people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may fluctuate and can become more noticeable during periods of physical or emotional stress.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
The main risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia is increasing age. A family history of the condition may increase susceptibility. Metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes have been associated with urinary symptoms and prostate enlargement. Cardiovascular disease and physical inactivity may also be associated with increased risk. Symptoms generally become more common as men grow older.
