Overview
Sciatica
Sciatica describes pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, usually from the lower back through the buttock and into the leg. It is a symptom rather than a disease itself and may result from a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or another condition affecting the nerve.
Cold Sores
Cold sores are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters that usually develop on or around the lips and mouth. They are caused by herpes simplex virus and often recur after the initial infection because the virus remains inactive in nerve tissue. Outbreaks commonly heal within several days to a few weeks.

Infection StressDiagnosis
Sciatica
Sciatica is usually diagnosed from the pattern of pain and symptoms together with a physical and neurological examination. The clinician may check muscle strength, sensation, reflexes, walking, and pain produced by leg movement. Imaging such as MRI or X-ray is generally considered when symptoms are severe, persistent, recurrent, or when another serious cause is suspected.
Cold Sores
Cold sores are usually diagnosed clinically from their characteristic appearance and symptoms, particularly grouped fluid-filled blisters around the lips or mouth. A healthcare professional may examine the affected area and ask about previous episodes and possible triggers. A swab or laboratory test may be considered when the appearance is unusual or the diagnosis is uncertain.
Prevention
Sciatica
Sciatica cannot always be prevented because it may result from age-related spinal changes or other conditions. Maintaining regular physical activity, strengthening the core and back, using proper lifting techniques, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding prolonged sitting may reduce strain on the spine. Work activities involving repeated bending, twisting, or heavy lifting should be performed with appropriate technique.
Cold Sores
Avoiding direct contact with active cold sores and not sharing items that contact the mouth can reduce transmission. During an outbreak, avoid kissing and oral contact with others until lesions have healed. Identifying and reducing personal triggers such as excessive sun exposure or fatigue may reduce recurrences. People with frequent or severe outbreaks should discuss treatment options with a healthcare professional.
Risk Factors
Sciatica
Risk of sciatica is influenced by conditions that affect the lower spine or sciatic nerve. Age-related spinal changes, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, prolonged sitting, physically demanding work, heavy lifting, and activities involving repeated bending or twisting may increase risk. Some spinal injuries or disorders can also contribute.
Cold Sores
Cold sore outbreaks may be more likely during periods of physical or emotional stress, fever, illness, fatigue, or hormonal changes. Sun exposure and local irritation around the lips can also trigger recurrence. People with weakened immune systems may experience more frequent, severe, or persistent outbreaks.
