Overview

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event involving serious injury, death, abuse, violence, disaster, or another extreme threat. Symptoms may include intrusive memories or nightmares, avoidance of reminders, negative changes in thoughts or mood, and increased alertness or startle responses. Symptoms can interfere with relationships, work, sleep, and daily activities.
Muscle Strain
A muscle strain is an injury in which a muscle or tendon is stretched or torn. It commonly occurs during sports, physical work, lifting, or sudden movements and may cause pain, tenderness, swelling, weakness, or difficulty moving the affected area. Strains can range from mild overstretching to partial or complete tearing of muscle or tendon tissue.

Diagnosis

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Diagnosis is based on a detailed clinical assessment of symptoms, their duration, their relationship to a traumatic event, and their effect on daily life. A mental health professional may ask about intrusive memories, avoidance, changes in mood and thinking, sleep, alertness, and functioning. PTSD is generally considered when the required symptom pattern persists for at least one month and causes significant distress or impairment.
Muscle Strain
Diagnosis is usually based on the history of injury, symptoms, and physical examination. The clinician assesses pain, swelling, tenderness, strength, range of motion, and the circumstances in which the injury occurred. Imaging is not always necessary for a straightforward strain but may be used when a severe tear, fracture, tendon injury, or another condition is suspected. Ultrasound or MRI can help evaluate soft-tissue damage in selected cases.

Prevention

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
There is no guaranteed way to prevent PTSD after trauma. Early access to supportive care, safe surroundings, practical assistance, and appropriate mental health support may help people cope after a traumatic event. People whose symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere substantially with daily life should seek professional evaluation. Avoiding alcohol and recreational drugs can also reduce factors that may worsen symptoms.
Muscle Strain
Gradual conditioning, appropriate warm-up, adequate recovery, and regular flexibility and strengthening exercises can reduce the risk of muscle strains. Use proper technique during sports, lifting, and physical work, and increase training intensity gradually rather than making sudden changes. Avoid strenuous activity when muscles are significantly fatigued or already injured. Returning to full activity should be gradual after an injury and guided by symptoms and appropriate medical advice.

Risk Factors

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Risk may be influenced by previous trauma, earlier emotional difficulties, repeated or severe traumatic experiences, limited social support, and personal or family factors affecting responses to stress. Certain traumatic events may carry greater risk than others. Having symptoms soon after trauma does not necessarily mean PTSD will develop, because normal distress after trauma can improve with time.
Muscle Strain
Risk increases with intense or sudden physical activity, inadequate conditioning, muscle fatigue, previous muscle injury, poor flexibility, and sudden increases in training intensity. Repetitive occupational activities and sports involving sprinting, jumping, or rapid changes in direction can also increase risk. Insufficient recovery between demanding activities may contribute to fatigue and reduced muscle control.
