Overview
Premenstrual Syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms that occur during the days or weeks before menstruation and usually improve after menstrual bleeding begins. Symptoms can vary considerably between individuals and may include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, fatigue, mood changes, irritability, food cravings, sleep changes, and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms may range from mild to severe and can change over time.
Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis is swelling of a kidney caused by urine building up because its normal drainage is blocked or impaired. It may affect one or both kidneys and can result from conditions such as kidney stones, narrowing of the urinary tract, an enlarged prostate, tumors, or urinary reflux. The condition may cause pain, urinary symptoms, infection, or reduced kidney function when severe or prolonged.

Diagnosis
Premenstrual Syndrome
Diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome is usually based on the recurring pattern of physical and emotional symptoms in the days before menstruation and improvement after menstruation begins. A symptom diary kept for several menstrual cycles can help establish the timing and severity of symptoms. There is no single laboratory test that confirms PMS. A healthcare professional may evaluate other conditions when symptoms are unusual, severe, persistent, or not clearly linked to the menstrual cycle.
Hydronephrosis
Diagnosis of hydronephrosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and imaging to identify kidney swelling and determine its cause. Ultrasound is commonly used to visualize the kidneys and urinary tract. CT or other imaging may be needed to identify stones, tumors, or obstruction. Blood and urine tests can help assess kidney function and identify infection or other urinary abnormalities.
Prevention
Premenstrual Syndrome
PMS cannot always be prevented because it is related to normal menstrual-cycle changes and individual sensitivity to those changes. Regular physical activity, adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, limiting factors that worsen symptoms, and effective stress management may help reduce symptom burden. Keeping a menstrual and symptom record can help identify recurring triggers and support early discussion with a healthcare professional when symptoms interfere with daily activities.
Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis itself is not always preventable because it can result from structural or medical conditions that cannot be avoided. Prompt evaluation of urinary symptoms, kidney stones, recurrent urinary infections, or difficulty passing urine may help identify obstruction early. Appropriate treatment of conditions that interfere with urinary flow can help protect kidney function.
Risk Factors
Premenstrual Syndrome
Risk factors and factors associated with greater symptom burden include a personal or family history of PMS, sensitivity to normal hormonal changes, and certain mood disorders. Symptoms may also be influenced by stress, poor sleep, limited physical activity, and other lifestyle factors. PMS can occur during the reproductive years and its severity may change during different stages of reproductive life.
Hydronephrosis
Risk depends on the cause of urinary obstruction. Kidney stones, urinary tract abnormalities, enlarged prostate, tumors, blood clots, urinary tract infections, and conditions that cause urine to flow backward toward the kidneys can increase risk. Hydronephrosis may also occur during pregnancy or in infants with developmental abnormalities of the urinary tract.
