Overview

Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs of one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, chills, chest discomfort, and difficulty breathing. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other infectious organisms, and its severity can range from mild to life-threatening.
Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in one or both ears when there is no corresponding outside source. It is commonly described as ringing but may also sound like buzzing, hissing, roaring, humming, whistling or other noises. Tinnitus may be temporary or persistent and can occur with hearing loss or other ear problems. Persistent or recurrent tinnitus may interfere with concentration or sleep and can sometimes indicate an underlying medical or ear-related condition.

Diagnosis

Pneumonia
Pneumonia is diagnosed using symptoms, a physical examination, and medical history. A healthcare professional may listen to the lungs for abnormal sounds. A chest X-ray or other imaging may help identify inflammation in the lungs. Depending on severity, additional tests such as blood tests, oxygen measurements, sputum testing, or other investigations may be needed to identify the cause or assess complications.
Tinnitus
Evaluation of tinnitus begins with a medical history and examination of the ears and hearing. Audiometry may be performed to determine whether hearing loss is present. Depending on the pattern of symptoms, additional testing may include CT or MRI of the head or tests of blood vessels. Particular attention is given to tinnitus that is persistent in one ear, pulsatile, associated with hearing loss or accompanied by dizziness or other neurological symptoms. Finding and treating an underlying cause may reduce or eliminate the tinnitus in some cases.

Prevention

Pneumonia
Pneumonia risk can be reduced through recommended vaccinations, regular hand hygiene, avoiding tobacco smoke, managing chronic medical conditions, maintaining good nutrition, and reducing exposure to people with respiratory infections when appropriate. People at higher risk should discuss recommended vaccines and preventive measures with a healthcare professional.
Tinnitus
Protecting hearing from excessive noise can reduce the risk of noise-related tinnitus. Use appropriate hearing protection around loud machinery, concerts and other intense sounds, and avoid prolonged exposure to loud music. Prompt treatment of ear conditions and avoiding unnecessary injury to the ear canal may also help. Limiting factors that make tinnitus worse, such as smoking, alcohol or excessive caffeine, may be useful for people who already experience tinnitus. Regular management of underlying health and hearing problems is also important.

Risk Factors

Pneumonia
Risk factors for pneumonia include older age, very young age, weakened immune function, chronic lung or heart disease, diabetes, smoking, poor nutrition, and prolonged hospitalization. Difficulty swallowing or impaired consciousness can increase the risk of aspiration. Exposure to certain infectious organisms and crowded environments may also increase risk.
Tinnitus
Risk factors include hearing loss, repeated exposure to loud sounds, ear infections, earwax buildup, head injury and disorders affecting the inner or middle ear. Some medicines can increase the likelihood of tinnitus. Smoking, alcohol and caffeine may make tinnitus more noticeable in some people. Other associated conditions include temporomandibular joint disorder, diabetes, thyroid disease and obesity. Older adults and people with significant hearing impairment may also experience tinnitus more often.
