Overview
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe cyclical condition in which emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms occur during the premenstrual phase and substantially interfere with daily functioning, relationships, work, or other activities. Symptoms typically improve after menstruation begins. PMDD is more severe than typical premenstrual symptoms and commonly includes marked mood changes, irritability, depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, sleep changes, and physical symptoms.
Adrenal Insufficiency
Adrenal insufficiency is a condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones needed for normal body function. It may result from problems affecting the adrenal glands themselves or from disorders involving the pituitary or other parts of the hormone-regulating system. Symptoms can develop gradually and may include fatigue, weakness, weight loss, and low blood pressure.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Diagnosis is based on the timing, number, severity, and cyclical recurrence of symptoms across menstrual cycles and the degree to which they interfere with daily functioning. Prospective symptom tracking over multiple cycles is often used to document the pattern. Evaluation also considers other psychiatric, medical, and gynecological conditions that can cause similar symptoms. There is no single blood test that confirms PMDD.
Adrenal Insufficiency
Diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency is based on symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and blood tests measuring adrenal hormones. Testing may show low cortisol or abnormal electrolyte levels. An ACTH stimulation test can assess adrenal response. Depending on the suspected cause, additional hormone tests, antibody testing, and imaging such as CT or MRI may be used.
Prevention
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
There is no guaranteed way to prevent PMDD because it is associated with individual sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations. Regular sleep, physical activity, balanced nutrition, and effective stress management may help reduce the impact of symptoms. Tracking menstrual cycles and symptoms can help identify patterns and support early assessment when emotional or physical symptoms repeatedly interfere with work, relationships, or other daily activities.
Adrenal Insufficiency
Adrenal insufficiency cannot always be prevented because it may result from autoimmune disease or other conditions that cannot be avoided. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of complications. People taking medicines that may affect adrenal function should follow medical guidance and should not change long-term treatment without professional advice.
Risk Factors
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Risk may be increased by a personal or family history of mood disorders, previous significant premenstrual symptoms, and individual sensitivity to normal reproductive hormone changes. Some people may also have coexisting anxiety or depressive disorders. PMDD occurs in people who are biologically sensitive to cyclical hormonal changes, and symptoms may vary over different stages of reproductive life.
Adrenal Insufficiency
Risk factors for adrenal insufficiency depend on whether the problem originates in the adrenal glands, pituitary gland, or another part of the hormone-regulating system. Autoimmune disorders and chronic illnesses may increase risk. Certain infections, prolonged use of some medicines, previous surgery, bleeding, tumors, or other conditions affecting hormone production may also contribute.
