Overview

Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is inflammation of the throat, often causing a sore or scratchy throat and pain when swallowing. It is commonly caused by viral infections such as those responsible for colds and influenza, although bacteria such as group A Streptococcus can also cause it. Symptoms may include fever, swollen throat tissues, cough, or swollen neck glands depending on the cause.
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks together with persistent concern about having additional attacks or significant changes in behavior related to them. A panic attack can cause sudden intense fear accompanied by symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest discomfort, or a feeling of losing control. The condition can interfere with daily activities and social functioning.

Diagnosis

Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is diagnosed from symptoms and examination of the throat. A clinician may look for redness, swelling, tonsil changes, and swollen lymph nodes and assess for other signs of respiratory infection. When bacterial infection is suspected, a rapid strep test or throat culture may be performed. Testing helps distinguish infections that may benefit from antibiotics from those caused by viruses.
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is diagnosed through a clinical assessment of recurrent panic attacks, persistent concern about further attacks, behavioral changes, and their effect on daily life. The clinician also considers whether symptoms are better explained by another mental health condition, medication, substance, or medical disorder. Physical symptoms such as chest pain, faintness, or breathing difficulty may require appropriate medical evaluation before being attributed to panic.

Prevention

Pharyngitis
Good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with people who are sick can reduce the spread of infectious causes of pharyngitis. Cover coughs and sneezes and avoid sharing utensils or drinking containers. Avoiding tobacco smoke and other throat irritants can reduce noninfectious irritation. Prompt evaluation of persistent or severe symptoms can help identify infections requiring specific treatment.
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder cannot always be prevented, but recognizing and addressing persistent anxiety or severe stress may help reduce the impact of symptoms. Regular sleep, physical activity, stress-management strategies, and limiting excessive caffeine or stimulant use may be useful. People experiencing recurrent panic attacks should seek professional assessment so that contributing medical, psychological, or substance-related factors can be identified and addressed.

Risk Factors

Pharyngitis
Risk factors include close contact with people who have respiratory infections, crowded indoor environments, frequent exposure to children, and poor hand hygiene. Tobacco smoke and other environmental irritants can also increase throat irritation. People with frequent exposure to respiratory infections may have repeated episodes. Certain underlying conditions can contribute to recurrent or persistent throat symptoms.
Panic Disorder
Risk may be increased by a family history of panic disorder or other anxiety conditions, major life stress, traumatic experiences, and prolonged psychological strain. Other anxiety disorders, depression, or substance use may coexist with panic symptoms. Caffeine and other stimulants can worsen symptoms in susceptible individuals. Certain medical conditions can produce similar physical sensations, so recurrent unexplained attacks should be medically assessed.
