Overview

Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks together with persistent concern about having additional attacks or significant changes in behavior related to them. A panic attack can cause sudden intense fear accompanied by symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest discomfort, or a feeling of losing control. The condition can interfere with daily activities and social functioning.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone is a chronic disorder in which the normal process of bone breakdown and rebuilding becomes abnormal. Affected bones may become enlarged, misshapen, weaker, and more prone to fracture. The disease often affects one or a few bones and may cause no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include bone pain, arthritis, hearing problems, or deformity depending on the bones involved.

Diagnosis

Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is diagnosed through a clinical assessment of recurrent panic attacks, persistent concern about further attacks, behavioral changes, and their effect on daily life. The clinician also considers whether symptoms are better explained by another mental health condition, medication, substance, or medical disorder. Physical symptoms such as chest pain, faintness, or breathing difficulty may require appropriate medical evaluation before being attributed to panic.
Paget Disease of Bone
Diagnosis may involve a medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging. An elevated alkaline phosphatase level can provide evidence of increased bone activity. X-rays are commonly used to identify characteristic changes in affected bones, while a bone scan can show which areas are involved. Additional imaging or biopsy may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or another bone disorder must be excluded.

Prevention

Panic Disorder
Panic disorder cannot always be prevented, but recognizing and addressing persistent anxiety or severe stress may help reduce the impact of symptoms. Regular sleep, physical activity, stress-management strategies, and limiting excessive caffeine or stimulant use may be useful. People experiencing recurrent panic attacks should seek professional assessment so that contributing medical, psychological, or substance-related factors can be identified and addressed.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone cannot currently be prevented because its underlying causes are not completely understood. Early detection and appropriate medical management can reduce the risk of complications in people who develop the condition. Maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake when appropriate, staying physically active within safe limits, and avoiding excessive stress on affected bones can support overall bone health. Exercise plans should be discussed with a healthcare professional when bones are weakened or deformed.

Risk Factors

Panic Disorder
Risk may be increased by a family history of panic disorder or other anxiety conditions, major life stress, traumatic experiences, and prolonged psychological strain. Other anxiety disorders, depression, or substance use may coexist with panic symptoms. Caffeine and other stimulants can worsen symptoms in susceptible individuals. Certain medical conditions can produce similar physical sensations, so recurrent unexplained attacks should be medically assessed.
Paget Disease of Bone
Paget disease of bone is more common with increasing age and is more frequently reported in people of certain European ancestry. Having a close family member with Paget disease increases the likelihood of developing the condition. The disease can occur without a known family history, and many affected people have no obvious symptoms when it is first discovered.
