Overview
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition characterized by recurring unwanted thoughts, images, or urges called obsessions and repetitive behaviors or mental acts called compulsions. These symptoms can consume substantial time, cause distress, and interfere with daily life. People often recognize that the symptoms are excessive or difficult to control, although this awareness can vary.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Chronic low back pain is persistent pain in the lower back that continues for several months or longer. It may result from problems involving the discs, joints, muscles, or other structures of the spine. Pain may remain localized to the lower back or sometimes extend into the buttocks or legs, depending on the underlying cause.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Diagnosis is based on a detailed mental health assessment identifying obsessions, compulsions, their frequency and duration, the distress they cause, and their impact on functioning. Clinicians also assess whether symptoms could be explained by another mental health condition, substance use, medication, or a medical disorder. Structured questionnaires may assist assessment, but there is no single laboratory or imaging test that confirms OCD.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Diagnosis of chronic low back pain is based primarily on the medical history and physical examination. The clinician assesses the location and duration of pain, movement, strength, sensation, and other symptoms that may suggest a particular cause. Imaging such as X-rays or MRI may be used when clinically necessary, particularly when symptoms are persistent, severe, or associated with concerning findings.
Prevention
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
OCD cannot reliably be prevented because its exact causes are not fully understood. Early recognition of persistent intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors can allow timely treatment and may reduce their impact on daily life. Supportive environments, stress management, and appropriate mental health care may be beneficial. Parents and caregivers should seek professional assessment when repetitive behaviors or fears become persistent, distressing, or disruptive.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Some episodes of chronic low back pain cannot be prevented, but regular physical activity can help maintain strength and flexibility. Maintaining a healthy weight may reduce strain on the back. Use safe lifting techniques by bending at the knees, keeping objects close to the body, and avoiding twisting while lifting. Avoid smoking and use supportive sitting and working positions when possible.
Risk Factors
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Risk factors for obsessive-compulsive disorder include a family history of OCD, certain genetic vulnerabilities, childhood adversity or trauma, and particular patterns of temperament. Symptoms may begin or worsen during periods of significant stress. Some people experience symptom onset or worsening around major life transitions. OCD can occur at any age, although symptoms often begin during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Risk factors for chronic low back pain include previous back injury, repeated physical strain, poor posture, and activities that place repeated stress on the spine. Physical inactivity or weak back and abdominal muscles may contribute. Increasing age, certain spinal conditions, excess body weight, and some chronic illnesses can also increase the likelihood that back pain will persist.
