Overview

Nightmare Disorder
Nightmare disorder involves repeated, disturbing dreams that cause significant distress or interfere with sleep and daytime functioning. Nightmares may lead to repeated awakenings, difficulty returning to sleep, fear of going to bed, daytime fatigue, or anxiety about sleep. Occasional nightmares are common, but frequent or persistent episodes may warrant evaluation for contributing psychological, medical, medication-related, or sleep-related factors.
Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted mainly through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is common in tropical and subtropical regions and is more frequently reported during periods favorable to mosquito breeding. Many infections cause no symptoms or produce a short illness with fever, headache, nausea, rash, and muscle or joint pain. A smaller proportion of infections can progress to severe dengue, which may cause bleeding, shock, and other serious complications.

Diagnosis

Nightmare Disorder
Nightmare disorder is diagnosed primarily from the history and pattern of recurrent disturbing dreams, awakenings, distress, and daytime impairment. A clinician may ask about sleep schedules, medications, substances, trauma, stress, mental health, and other sleep symptoms. A sleep diary can help document patterns. A sleep study is not routinely required but may be considered when another sleep disorder is suspected.
Dengue Fever
Dengue is diagnosed using the medical history, symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory testing. Blood tests can detect evidence of dengue infection and may be selected according to the stage of illness. Testing may include molecular tests such as polymerase chain reaction, antibody testing, and other laboratory investigations. A complete blood count and liver-related tests may also help healthcare professionals assess the illness and identify possible complications.

Prevention

Nightmare Disorder
Occasional nightmares are common and cannot always be prevented. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and avoiding excessive stimulation before bedtime may help promote healthier sleep. Addressing trauma, anxiety, or other psychological difficulties can be important when nightmares are recurrent. Reviewing medicines or substances that may affect dreams with a healthcare professional can also be useful.
Dengue Fever
Preventing mosquito bites is an important way to reduce the risk of dengue. Measures include using appropriate insect repellent, wearing clothing that covers the arms and legs, using window screens or other barriers, and sleeping under mosquito nets when appropriate. Reducing standing water around homes can limit mosquito breeding sites. People traveling to areas where dengue occurs should learn about local transmission and take practical precautions throughout their stay.

Risk Factors

Nightmare Disorder
Risk factors include frequent stress or anxiety, traumatic experiences, disrupted sleep schedules, sleep deprivation, and some medicines or substances. Children commonly experience nightmares, and episodes can increase during periods of developmental or emotional change. People with post-traumatic stress disorder or other psychological conditions may experience recurrent distressing dreams. Persistent nightmares can also occur alongside certain sleep disorders.
Dengue Fever
Living in or traveling to areas where dengue transmission occurs increases the likelihood of infection because infected mosquitoes may be present. Exposure to mosquito bites is the main risk factor. A previous dengue infection can increase the risk of severe dengue during a later infection. Infants, pregnancy, and certain other circumstances may also increase concern for severe disease. Mosquito exposure is particularly important in warm and wet environments where transmission is common.
