Overview

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and an uncontrollable tendency to fall asleep during the day. Some people also experience cataplexy, a sudden temporary loss of muscle control triggered by emotions. Other features may include sleep paralysis, vivid dream-like experiences when falling asleep or waking, and disrupted nighttime sleep.
Acute Stress Disorder
Acute stress disorder (ASD) is a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened arousal, and dissociation. ASD is diagnosed when significant symptoms occur from 3 days to 1 month after the trauma and cause substantial distress or impairment.

Diagnosis

Narcolepsy
Diagnosis requires assessment of daytime sleepiness, nighttime sleep patterns, cataplexy and other symptoms. A healthcare professional may use sleep diaries and standardized sleepiness questionnaires. Overnight polysomnography can evaluate nighttime sleep and exclude other sleep disorders. A multiple sleep latency test performed during the following day can measure how quickly a person falls asleep and whether REM sleep occurs unusually early. Hypocretin testing may be considered in selected cases.
Acute Stress Disorder
Diagnosis requires a clinical assessment of the traumatic event, symptoms, their duration, and their effect on daily functioning. A qualified mental health professional may assess symptoms such as intrusion, avoidance, arousal, and dissociation while also considering other medical or psychological explanations. ASD is distinguished from PTSD partly by the timing of symptoms, with ASD occurring from 3 days to 1 month after trauma.

Prevention

Narcolepsy
There is no established way to prevent most cases of narcolepsy because its underlying causes are not fully understood. Recognizing persistent excessive daytime sleepiness and seeking evaluation can help identify the disorder and reduce associated problems. People with narcolepsy should follow their treatment plan, maintain regular sleep schedules, use planned naps when advised, and take appropriate precautions around driving, operating machinery, and other activities affected by sudden sleepiness.
Acute Stress Disorder
There is no guaranteed way to prevent acute stress disorder after a traumatic event. After trauma, ensuring safety, obtaining appropriate support, and seeking professional help when distress is severe or interferes with daily life may support recovery. People with persistent or significant trauma-related symptoms should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

Risk Factors

Narcolepsy
Risk may be influenced by family history and genetic susceptibility. Having a close relative with narcolepsy may increase the likelihood of developing the disorder, although most people with narcolepsy do not have an affected close family member. Certain neurological injuries or diseases may also be associated with secondary forms of narcolepsy. The condition can begin at different ages but often starts during adolescence or young adulthood.
Acute Stress Disorder
Risk may be increased by previous traumatic experiences, a history of post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental health conditions, and certain types of traumatic exposure, including interpersonal violence. However, it is difficult to predict which individuals will develop acute stress disorder after a traumatic event.
