Overview
Molluscum Contagiosum
Molluscum contagiosum is a contagious viral skin infection that causes small, firm, painless bumps, often with a central indentation. The lesions may appear on the face, neck, arms, hands, trunk, or other areas of the skin. In adults they may occur around the genitals. The infection is usually self-limited in people with healthy immune systems, although lesions can persist for months or longer.
Chikungunya
Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted primarily by infected Aedes mosquitoes. It commonly causes sudden fever and severe joint pain, often accompanied by headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, rash, or fatigue. Most people recover, but joint pain can persist for weeks or months in some cases. The illness can resemble other mosquito-borne infections, so clinical evaluation may be important when symptoms occur after exposure in an area where chikungunya is circulating. Treatment is generally focused on relieving symptoms and maintaining adequate fluids while monitoring for complications.

Diagnosis
Molluscum Contagiosum
Diagnosis is usually based on the characteristic appearance of the skin lesions and a clinical examination. The typical bumps are small, flesh-colored or pearly, and often have a central dimple. Laboratory testing is not usually necessary. When lesions are unusual or the diagnosis is uncertain, a healthcare professional may examine a sample of a lesion under a microscope or use another appropriate test.
Chikungunya
Diagnosis of chikungunya is based on symptoms, exposure history, and laboratory testing when confirmation is required. Blood tests can detect viral genetic material during the early phase of illness, while antibody testing may become useful later in the infection. Because chikungunya can resemble dengue and other infections that cause fever and joint pain, the healthcare professional may consider the local pattern of disease and the patient's travel or mosquito exposure. Testing may be especially important when the diagnosis affects management or public-health decisions.
Prevention
Molluscum Contagiosum
Avoid direct skin contact with visible molluscum lesions and do not share towels, clothing, razors, or other personal items that may contact affected skin. Covering lesions when practical can reduce contact with them, and people with genital lesions should discuss sexual precautions with a healthcare professional. Condoms may reduce but cannot completely prevent sexual transmission because uncovered skin can remain infectious.
Chikungunya
Preventing mosquito bites is an important way to reduce the risk of chikungunya. Use appropriate insect repellent, wear clothing that reduces exposed skin, and use screens or air conditioning where available. Mosquitoes can breed in standing water, so removing or covering water-holding containers around homes can reduce breeding sites. During outbreaks or travel to affected areas, additional mosquito precautions are especially important. People who develop symptoms should take measures to avoid further mosquito exposure during the early illness period so mosquitoes do not acquire the virus from them.
Risk Factors
Molluscum Contagiosum
Risk is higher in children who have close skin contact with other children, people who share contaminated personal items, and adults with sexual exposure to an infected partner. People with eczema may be more susceptible to extensive lesions, and those with weakened immune systems, including some people with HIV infection, may develop more numerous or persistent lesions.
Chikungunya
Risk of chikungunya is greatest in places where infected Aedes mosquitoes are present and the virus is circulating. Living in or traveling to an affected area increases the opportunity for mosquito exposure. Risk may also increase where mosquitoes can breed around homes because of standing water in suitable containers or other locations. People of any age can become infected, while older adults, very young children, pregnant people, and individuals with certain chronic illnesses may have greater risk of complications.
