Overview

Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that occur together and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It commonly involves increased waist circumference, high blood pressure, abnormal blood glucose, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol. Having several of these abnormalities together is more concerning than having one alone.
Delusional Disorder
Delusional disorder is a mental health condition characterized by one or more firmly held false beliefs that persist for at least one month. The beliefs may concern subjects such as persecution, jealousy, relationships, or physical health. Unlike some other psychotic disorders, prominent hallucinations, disorganized speech, and other major psychotic symptoms are not typical features of the disorder.

Diagnosis

Metabolic Syndrome
Diagnosis is based on measurement of the metabolic abnormalities that make up the syndrome. Healthcare professionals may assess waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose or other measures of blood sugar, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol. Medical history and physical examination help identify associated conditions. Different clinical guidelines use slightly different thresholds for defining the individual components.
Delusional Disorder
Diagnosis requires a comprehensive psychiatric assessment and review of the person's history and symptoms. A healthcare professional evaluates the nature and duration of the beliefs and assesses whether other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, substance use, neurological conditions, or other medical causes could explain the symptoms.

Prevention

Metabolic Syndrome
Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco, and limiting excessive alcohol can help reduce metabolic risk. Managing blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol is also important. Reducing excess abdominal weight when appropriate can improve several metabolic abnormalities. People with multiple risk factors should have appropriate health screening and follow-up.
Delusional Disorder
There is no established method for reliably preventing delusional disorder. Early evaluation of persistent or unusual beliefs, particularly when they cause significant distress, conflict, or changes in behavior, can help identify possible mental health or medical causes and connect the person with appropriate professional care.

Risk Factors

Metabolic Syndrome
Risk factors include excess abdominal weight, physical inactivity, increasing age, insulin resistance, unhealthy dietary patterns, family history, and certain hormonal or metabolic conditions. The likelihood is also influenced by high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipids, and elevated blood glucose. Risk generally increases as more components of metabolic syndrome are present.
Delusional Disorder
The factors associated with delusional disorder are not completely understood. It generally develops in adulthood and may occur more often in middle-aged or older adults. A history of certain personality traits or other psychiatric or medical conditions may be relevant, but no single factor reliably predicts who will develop the disorder.
