Overview

Melanoma
Melanoma is a type of cancer that begins in melanocytes, the cells that produce the pigment melanin. It commonly develops in the skin but can occur in other tissues containing pigment-producing cells. A melanoma may appear as a new unusual spot or as a change in an existing mole, including changes in its size, shape, border, color, or appearance.
Varicocele
A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins in other parts of the body. It most commonly occurs on the left side and may cause no symptoms. Some people experience a dull aching discomfort, a feeling of heaviness, or a noticeable enlargement of the scrotal veins. Varicoceles can be associated with impaired testicular development or abnormal sperm production in some individuals and are sometimes discovered during evaluation for fertility problems.

Diagnosis

Melanoma
Diagnosis of melanoma begins with examination of a suspicious skin lesion and assessment of changes in its appearance. Features such as asymmetry, an irregular border, uneven color, increasing size, or evolution over time may raise concern. The diagnosis is confirmed by removing all or part of the suspicious tissue and examining it under a microscope. Additional tests may be used to determine whether the cancer has spread.
Varicocele
A varicocele is often detected during a physical examination while standing and sometimes while performing a maneuver that increases abdominal pressure. The clinician may assess the size of the testicles and the degree of venous enlargement. Scrotal ultrasound can confirm the diagnosis and evaluate blood flow when the examination is uncertain. Semen analysis may be considered in people being evaluated for fertility, and adolescents may undergo monitoring of testicular growth.

Prevention

Melanoma
Limiting exposure to ultraviolet radiation can reduce melanoma risk. Avoid tanning beds, seek shade, use protective clothing, and take precautions when spending time in strong sunlight. People with many or atypical moles or a personal or family history of melanoma should discuss appropriate skin examinations with a healthcare professional. Report new or changing skin lesions promptly.
Varicocele
There is no established way to completely prevent varicocele because its development is largely related to individual venous anatomy. Regular medical assessment during adolescence can help identify changes in testicular size or development. People who notice scrotal swelling, persistent discomfort, or fertility concerns should seek evaluation. Early assessment is particularly useful when a varicocele is associated with reduced testicular growth or abnormal reproductive function.

Risk Factors

Melanoma
Risk factors include exposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially repeated sun exposure and severe blistering sunburns, use of tanning beds, fair skin that burns easily, many or atypical moles, and a personal or family history of melanoma. Certain inherited genetic conditions and weakened immunity can also increase risk. Melanoma can occur in people of all skin colors.
Varicocele
Varicocele is most often identified during adolescence or early adulthood. The condition is more common on the left side because of differences in venous anatomy. Family or individual anatomical factors may influence susceptibility. A varicocele may be associated with abnormal testicular growth or fertility difficulties, although many people with varicoceles have normal fertility and no symptoms. A newly appearing varicocele later in adulthood may require evaluation for an underlying cause.
