Overview
Laryngotracheitis
Laryngotracheitis is inflammation involving the larynx and trachea, commonly occurring as part of a viral respiratory infection. It may cause hoarseness, a barking or harsh cough, noisy breathing, sore throat, fever, and other upper respiratory symptoms. The condition is particularly recognized in young children, in whom swelling of the upper airway can cause breathing difficulty. Most cases are mild and improve as the underlying infection resolves, but significant breathing difficulty requires prompt medical attention.
Gaming Disorder
Gaming disorder is a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior in which gaming becomes difficult to control and takes increasing priority over other activities and responsibilities. Affected individuals may continue gaming despite negative consequences involving education, work, relationships, sleep, or physical health. The severity and presentation can vary, and occasional heavy gaming by itself does not establish the disorder. Assessment considers the overall pattern, duration, loss of control, and impact on daily functioning.

StressDiagnosis
Laryngotracheitis
Diagnosis is usually based on the characteristic barking cough, hoarseness, and symptoms of upper-airway inflammation. A clinician evaluates breathing effort, respiratory rate, oxygenation when appropriate, and the presence of noisy breathing at rest or during activity. Routine laboratory tests and imaging are often unnecessary in uncomplicated cases. Severe, unusual, or rapidly worsening symptoms may require further assessment to distinguish laryngotracheitis from bacterial airway infection, foreign-body aspiration, or other causes of respiratory distress.
Gaming Disorder
Diagnosis is based on a detailed assessment of gaming behavior and its impact on daily life. Clinicians consider loss of control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming, continuation despite negative consequences, duration of the pattern, and impairment in personal, family, educational, occupational, or social functioning. Information from the individual and, when appropriate, family members can help clarify the pattern. Assessment should also consider depression, anxiety, substance use, sleep problems, and other conditions that may require attention.
Prevention
Laryngotracheitis
Because laryngotracheitis is usually caused by respiratory viruses, prevention involves reducing exposure and transmission. Hand hygiene, avoiding close contact during acute illness, improving indoor ventilation, and covering coughs and sneezes can help. Children with respiratory infections should be kept home from school or childcare when appropriate according to local guidance. Vaccination against preventable respiratory infections can reduce the risk of some illnesses that may produce similar airway symptoms.
Gaming Disorder
There is no guaranteed way to prevent gaming disorder. Maintaining balanced routines that include sleep, physical activity, education or work, relationships, and non-gaming interests can help reduce excessive reliance on gaming. Families can establish appropriate boundaries around gaming and encourage healthy coping strategies for stress and emotional difficulties. Persistent loss of control or significant impairment should prompt early discussion with a healthcare or mental health professional.
Risk Factors
Laryngotracheitis
Laryngotracheitis is particularly common in young children because their upper airways are narrower, so relatively modest swelling can produce noticeable breathing symptoms. Exposure to respiratory viruses, attendance at childcare or school, and close contact with infected individuals increase exposure. Seasonal viral circulation also affects risk. Children with certain underlying airway or respiratory problems may experience more significant symptoms when an infection causes airway swelling.
Gaming Disorder
Factors associated with increased vulnerability may include frequent or prolonged gaming, using gaming as a primary way to cope with stress or negative emotions, social isolation, family or relationship difficulties, and problems with school or work functioning. Depression, anxiety, attention difficulties, sleep problems, and other behavioral or mental health conditions may coexist. These associations vary between individuals and should not be interpreted as proof that a particular factor causes gaming disorder.
