Overview

Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer is a cancer that begins in the kidneys, usually in the cells lining the small tubes that filter blood and produce urine. Early kidney cancer may cause no symptoms. As it grows, it can cause blood in the urine, persistent pain in the side or back, a lump, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or other changes in health.
Endocarditis
Endocarditis is an infection or inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and, most importantly, the heart valves. It is usually caused by bacteria that enter the bloodstream and attach to abnormal or damaged heart tissue, although fungi and other microorganisms can occasionally cause it. Symptoms may develop gradually or appear suddenly and can include fever, chills, fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and abnormal heart sounds. Endocarditis can damage heart valves and cause serious complications if it is not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Diagnosis

Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer is evaluated using the medical history, physical examination, and tests such as blood and urine studies and imaging. Ultrasound, CT, or MRI can help identify a kidney mass and assess its location and extent. A biopsy may be performed in selected cases when tissue confirmation is needed. Additional imaging may be used to look for spread.
Endocarditis
Diagnosis of endocarditis is based on symptoms, medical history, physical examination, blood cultures, and heart imaging. Multiple blood samples are usually collected to identify the responsible microorganism before antibiotics are started when possible. Echocardiography can detect abnormal growths on valves, valve damage, or other cardiac findings. Additional imaging and laboratory tests may be needed to identify complications or the source of infection. Diagnosis can be challenging when blood cultures are negative or symptoms are nonspecific.

Prevention

Kidney Cancer
There is no guaranteed way to prevent kidney cancer because some risk factors cannot be changed. Avoiding tobacco use is an important preventive measure. Maintaining a healthy body weight, managing blood pressure, and following appropriate medical care for kidney disease may also reduce risk. People with a strong family history or inherited risk may benefit from medical assessment and appropriate surveillance.
Endocarditis
Not all cases of endocarditis can be prevented. Good oral hygiene and regular dental care can reduce some sources of bloodstream infection. People at particularly high risk may be advised to receive preventive antibiotics before certain dental procedures, according to current medical recommendations. Prompt treatment of skin infections and avoiding injection of drugs with shared or contaminated equipment can also reduce risk. People with prosthetic valves or previous endocarditis should follow individualized prevention advice from their healthcare team.

Risk Factors

Kidney Cancer
Risk factors for kidney cancer include smoking, excess body weight, high blood pressure, long-term dialysis, a family history of kidney cancer, and certain inherited disorders such as von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. Risk generally increases with age. Some long-term medication exposures and certain kidney conditions may also increase risk.
Endocarditis
Risk factors for endocarditis include certain abnormal or artificial heart valves, previous endocarditis, some congenital heart conditions, injection of drugs with contaminated equipment, and infections that can enter the bloodstream. Certain invasive medical procedures may increase exposure to bacteria, although the absolute risk varies. People with damaged heart tissue or prosthetic valves are particularly susceptible because microorganisms can attach more easily to abnormal surfaces. Good dental and general health can reduce some sources of bloodstream infection.
