Overview

Hyperparathyroidism
Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone. This hormone regulates calcium levels in the blood and bones. Excess hormone can raise blood calcium and cause calcium to be released from bones. Some people have no symptoms, while others may develop kidney stones, bone problems, weakness, fatigue, or digestive symptoms.
Alzheimer Disease
Alzheimer disease is a progressive brain disorder that gradually damages memory, thinking, reasoning, and other cognitive abilities. As the disease progresses, a person may have increasing difficulty performing familiar everyday activities and may develop changes in communication, behavior, or judgment. The course varies between individuals, but symptoms generally become more significant over time as brain cells and connections are affected.

Diagnosis

Hyperparathyroidism
Diagnosis is usually based on blood tests showing elevated calcium and parathyroid hormone levels in primary disease. Additional tests may measure phosphate, vitamin D, kidney function, and urinary calcium. Bone density testing and imaging may be used to assess complications. In secondary disease, testing focuses on identifying the underlying cause.
Alzheimer Disease
Diagnosis of Alzheimer disease involves evaluating memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday activities. Cognitive testing and neurological examination can help identify patterns of impairment. Brain imaging may be used to assess brain structure and exclude other causes of symptoms. Laboratory assessments may also be performed to identify potentially treatable conditions that can cause or worsen cognitive problems. The diagnosis is based on the overall clinical assessment and available test findings.

Prevention

Hyperparathyroidism
Some forms of hyperparathyroidism cannot be prevented. Maintaining adequate vitamin D and calcium, managing kidney disease appropriately, and treating conditions that cause chronic disturbances in calcium balance may reduce the risk of secondary disease. People with known parathyroid or endocrine disorders should follow recommended monitoring and treatment.
Alzheimer Disease
There is no guaranteed method for preventing Alzheimer disease, but maintaining overall brain and cardiovascular health may be beneficial. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and continued mental and social activity can support general health. Managing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other cardiovascular risk factors is also important. Regular medical care can help identify and manage health problems that may affect cognitive function.

Risk Factors

Hyperparathyroidism
Risk depends on the type of hyperparathyroidism. Primary disease is more common with increasing age and may be associated with certain inherited endocrine disorders or previous radiation exposure to the neck. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is more likely with chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, or conditions that interfere with calcium absorption.
Alzheimer Disease
Advanced age is the strongest known risk factor for Alzheimer disease. Having a family history of the condition or certain genetic factors can increase susceptibility. Cardiovascular conditions and factors that affect blood vessel health may also be associated with increased risk. Other potentially relevant factors include physical inactivity and some lifestyle-related health conditions. Having a risk factor does not mean that a person will necessarily develop Alzheimer disease.
