Overview

Hyperparathyroidism
Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone. This hormone regulates calcium levels in the blood and bones. Excess hormone can raise blood calcium and cause calcium to be released from bones. Some people have no symptoms, while others may develop kidney stones, bone problems, weakness, fatigue, or digestive symptoms.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. Symptoms can affect school, work, relationships, organization, and time management. ADHD commonly begins during childhood, although some people are diagnosed later when demands increase or symptoms become more noticeable.

Diagnosis

Hyperparathyroidism
Diagnosis is usually based on blood tests showing elevated calcium and parathyroid hormone levels in primary disease. Additional tests may measure phosphate, vitamin D, kidney function, and urinary calcium. Bone density testing and imaging may be used to assess complications. In secondary disease, testing focuses on identifying the underlying cause.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Diagnosis of ADHD involves a comprehensive assessment rather than a single laboratory or imaging test. A clinician considers the pattern, duration, severity, and impact of symptoms and determines whether they occur in more than one setting. Information from the individual, family members, teachers, or other relevant observers may be useful, especially for children. The assessment also considers alternative explanations and coexisting conditions.

Prevention

Hyperparathyroidism
Some forms of hyperparathyroidism cannot be prevented. Maintaining adequate vitamin D and calcium, managing kidney disease appropriately, and treating conditions that cause chronic disturbances in calcium balance may reduce the risk of secondary disease. People with known parathyroid or endocrine disorders should follow recommended monitoring and treatment.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
There is no established way to completely prevent ADHD because genetic and developmental factors play important roles. Supporting healthy pregnancy and early childhood development and reducing avoidable prenatal risks are generally beneficial for child health. Early recognition of persistent difficulties can allow appropriate educational, behavioral, and clinical support. Establishing predictable routines, sleep habits, organizational strategies, and supportive environments can help reduce functional difficulties.

Risk Factors

Hyperparathyroidism
Risk depends on the type of hyperparathyroidism. Primary disease is more common with increasing age and may be associated with certain inherited endocrine disorders or previous radiation exposure to the neck. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is more likely with chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, or conditions that interfere with calcium absorption.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Risk factors and associated features include a family history of ADHD, childhood developmental differences, and certain prenatal or early-life factors. Symptoms may become more noticeable when academic, occupational, or organizational demands increase. Coexisting learning, behavioral, emotional, or sleep difficulties can complicate the presentation. Having one risk factor does not mean that a person will develop ADHD, and the condition can occur without an obvious identifiable risk factor.
