Overview

Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis is swelling of a kidney caused by urine building up because its normal drainage is blocked or impaired. It may affect one or both kidneys and can result from conditions such as kidney stones, narrowing of the urinary tract, an enlarged prostate, tumors, or urinary reflux. The condition may cause pain, urinary symptoms, infection, or reduced kidney function when severe or prolonged.
Bone Cancer
Bone cancer refers to malignant tumors that originate in bone tissue. Primary bone cancers are relatively uncommon and differ from cancers that begin elsewhere in the body and spread to bone. Symptoms may include persistent localized bone pain, swelling, tenderness, or reduced function, although early disease may not cause obvious symptoms. Different types have different biological behavior and commonly affect particular age groups and locations. Evaluation and treatment depend on the tumor type and extent.

Diagnosis

Hydronephrosis
Diagnosis of hydronephrosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and imaging to identify kidney swelling and determine its cause. Ultrasound is commonly used to visualize the kidneys and urinary tract. CT or other imaging may be needed to identify stones, tumors, or obstruction. Blood and urine tests can help assess kidney function and identify infection or other urinary abnormalities.
Bone Cancer
Evaluation commonly begins with a history and physical examination followed by imaging of the affected area. X-rays can identify many bone tumors and may show changes in bone structure. Magnetic resonance imaging can define the local extent of a lesion and its relationship to nearby tissues. A biopsy is generally required to establish the specific diagnosis. Additional imaging or tests may be used to determine whether the tumor has spread and to guide treatment planning.

Prevention

Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis itself is not always preventable because it can result from structural or medical conditions that cannot be avoided. Prompt evaluation of urinary symptoms, kidney stones, recurrent urinary infections, or difficulty passing urine may help identify obstruction early. Appropriate treatment of conditions that interfere with urinary flow can help protect kidney function.
Bone Cancer
There is no established way to prevent most primary bone cancers because their causes are often unknown and many recognized risk factors cannot be modified. Avoiding unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation and appropriately managing medical conditions associated with specific bone tumors may reduce certain risks. People with known inherited cancer syndromes or relevant bone disorders may benefit from specialist monitoring. Persistent unexplained bone pain, swelling, or a growing mass should receive medical evaluation.

Risk Factors

Hydronephrosis
Risk depends on the cause of urinary obstruction. Kidney stones, urinary tract abnormalities, enlarged prostate, tumors, blood clots, urinary tract infections, and conditions that cause urine to flow backward toward the kidneys can increase risk. Hydronephrosis may also occur during pregnancy or in infants with developmental abnormalities of the urinary tract.
Bone Cancer
Risk factors depend on the specific type of bone cancer. Certain inherited cancer syndromes and genetic conditions are associated with increased risk of particular tumors. Previous radiation exposure can increase the risk of some bone cancers. Certain pre-existing bone disorders are also associated with particular tumor types. Most people who develop primary bone cancer do not have an identifiable preventable risk factor, and the condition is not generally caused by ordinary physical activity or minor injuries.
