Overview

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, recurrent lumps, nodules, and abscesses, usually in areas where skin rubs together such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, or under the breasts. Lesions may drain pus and heal with scars or tunnels under the skin. The condition often begins after puberty and may persist or recur over time.
Testicular Torsion
Testicular torsion is a medical emergency in which the spermatic cord twists and reduces or completely cuts off blood flow to a testicle. It usually causes sudden and severe pain and swelling in one side of the scrotum and may be accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are important because prolonged loss of blood supply can permanently damage the testicle.

Diagnosis

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Diagnosis is usually based on the medical history, the pattern and location of recurrent skin lesions, and physical examination. There is no single test that confirms hidradenitis suppurativa. A healthcare professional may examine nodules, abscesses, scars, and draining areas and may collect a sample of pus or affected tissue when another infection or diagnosis needs to be considered.
Testicular Torsion
Diagnosis is based on the sudden onset and characteristics of scrotal pain, medical history, and physical examination. The affected testicle may be swollen, tender, or positioned differently from the other testicle. Doppler ultrasound can assess blood flow and help distinguish torsion from other causes of acute scrotal pain. When torsion is strongly suspected, emergency surgical evaluation should not be unnecessarily delayed for testing.

Prevention

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa cannot always be prevented, but some measures may reduce irritation and flare-ups. Maintaining a healthy weight when appropriate, avoiding smoking, wearing loose-fitting clothing, reducing friction, and avoiding unnecessary skin injury may help. Keeping regular medical follow-up is important when lesions recur or complications such as scarring develop.
Testicular Torsion
Many cases of testicular torsion cannot be prevented because the underlying anatomical abnormality is usually present from birth. People who have experienced torsion on one side may be advised to have the other testicle surgically secured to prevent future twisting. Any sudden or severe testicular or scrotal pain should be treated as an emergency because prompt treatment gives the best chance of preserving blood flow and testicular function.

Risk Factors

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is more common after puberty and occurs more often in women and people with a family history of the condition. Overweight or obesity and smoking are associated with increased risk and may also be linked with more severe disease. Friction, heat, and repeated skin injury may aggravate symptoms in some people.
Testicular Torsion
Testicular torsion is more common during adolescence, although it can occur at any age. An anatomical abnormality that allows the testicle to rotate freely is the main underlying risk factor. A previous episode of torsion or a family history of torsion may increase risk. Sudden movement, exercise, or minor injury may sometimes precede an episode, but torsion can also occur without an obvious trigger.
