Overview

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, recurrent lumps, nodules, and abscesses, usually in areas where skin rubs together such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, or under the breasts. Lesions may drain pus and heal with scars or tunnels under the skin. The condition often begins after puberty and may persist or recur over time.
Orchitis
Orchitis is inflammation of one or both testicles. It may be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Mumps is a well-known viral cause, while bacterial orchitis can occur with infections involving the urinary tract or reproductive system. Symptoms may include testicular pain, swelling, tenderness, fever, and fatigue.

Diagnosis

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Diagnosis is usually based on the medical history, the pattern and location of recurrent skin lesions, and physical examination. There is no single test that confirms hidradenitis suppurativa. A healthcare professional may examine nodules, abscesses, scars, and draining areas and may collect a sample of pus or affected tissue when another infection or diagnosis needs to be considered.
Orchitis
Orchitis is diagnosed using symptoms, medical history, and examination of the scrotum and testicles. Tests may include urine testing, blood tests, and testing for sexually transmitted infections when appropriate. Ultrasound may help distinguish orchitis from other causes of acute testicular pain, particularly testicular torsion, which requires urgent treatment.

Prevention

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa cannot always be prevented, but some measures may reduce irritation and flare-ups. Maintaining a healthy weight when appropriate, avoiding smoking, wearing loose-fitting clothing, reducing friction, and avoiding unnecessary skin injury may help. Keeping regular medical follow-up is important when lesions recur or complications such as scarring develop.
Orchitis
Vaccination against mumps is an important way to reduce the risk of mumps-related orchitis. Prompt evaluation and treatment of urinary, reproductive, and sexually transmitted infections can help prevent complications. Practicing safer sex and seeking medical care for symptoms of infection can also reduce the risk of infections that may involve the testicles.

Risk Factors

Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is more common after puberty and occurs more often in women and people with a family history of the condition. Overweight or obesity and smoking are associated with increased risk and may also be linked with more severe disease. Friction, heat, and repeated skin injury may aggravate symptoms in some people.
Orchitis
Risk factors include infections such as mumps, urinary or reproductive tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, and conditions that increase the likelihood of infection spreading to the testicles. Lack of vaccination against mumps can increase the risk of mumps-related orchitis.
