Overview
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen or enlarged veins in the lower rectum or around the anus. They may occur inside the rectum or beneath the skin around the anus and can cause bleeding, itching, irritation, swelling, discomfort, or pain. Hemorrhoids are common and may develop when increased pressure is placed on the veins during bowel movements or other activities.
Avian Influenza
Avian influenza is an infection caused by influenza A viruses that primarily affect birds but can occasionally infect humans and other animals. Human infections are uncommon but can sometimes cause severe respiratory illness. Most human infections occur after close or prolonged contact with infected birds, animals, or contaminated environments.

InfectionDiagnosis
Hemorrhoids
Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and examination of the anus and rectum. External hemorrhoids may be visible during inspection, while internal hemorrhoids may require a digital rectal examination or anoscopy for evaluation. Additional testing may be recommended when bleeding is unexplained, symptoms are unusual, or another intestinal condition needs to be excluded.
Avian Influenza
Diagnosis of avian influenza requires laboratory testing because symptoms can resemble other respiratory infections. Testing may involve molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction on respiratory specimens. A detailed history of contact with birds, animals, contaminated environments, and relevant travel or outbreak exposure is important when evaluating possible infection.
Prevention
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids can often be prevented or reduced by keeping stools soft and avoiding straining during bowel movements. Eating enough fiber, drinking adequate fluids, exercising regularly, and treating constipation can help. Avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods and respond to the urge to have a bowel movement rather than repeatedly delaying it. Maintaining a healthy weight may also reduce pressure on the veins around the anus.
Avian Influenza
Reducing contact with sick or dead birds and animals, avoiding contaminated environments, using appropriate protective equipment when exposure cannot be avoided, and practicing good hand hygiene can reduce risk. People working with poultry or infected animals should follow public-health and occupational infection-control guidance.
Risk Factors
Hemorrhoids
Risk factors include a low-fiber diet, chronic constipation or diarrhea, repeated straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, obesity, pregnancy, and increasing age. Activities that repeatedly increase abdominal pressure, including heavy lifting, may also contribute. People who spend long periods sitting on the toilet or have persistent bowel problems may have a higher risk of developing symptomatic hemorrhoids.
Avian Influenza
Risk is mainly associated with close or prolonged contact with infected birds or animals, contaminated environments, or surfaces containing infectious material. People working with poultry or other potentially infected animals may have greater exposure. Risk can vary according to the circulating virus and local animal infections.
