Overview
Fungal Pneumonia
Fungal pneumonia is a lung infection caused by fungi. Different fungi can cause different forms of pneumonia, including infections acquired from environmental exposure and infections that occur more readily in people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, chills, or chest discomfort.
Addison Disease
Addison disease is a disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough of certain hormones, particularly cortisol and, in many cases, aldosterone. The condition can develop when the adrenal glands are damaged, most commonly through an autoimmune process. Symptoms may develop gradually and can include fatigue, weakness, weight loss, and changes in blood pressure.

Fungal Pneumonia
Diagnosis depends on the suspected fungus and clinical circumstances. Evaluation may include a medical history, physical examination, chest imaging, and laboratory testing of blood, urine, sputum, respiratory samples, or tissue. Because fungal pneumonia can resemble bacterial or viral pneumonia, identifying the specific cause may require targeted testing.
Addison Disease
Diagnosis of Addison disease involves assessment of symptoms, medical history, and hormone testing. Blood tests may show low cortisol levels and abnormalities in sodium or potassium. An ACTH stimulation test is commonly used to assess how well the adrenal glands respond to stimulation. Additional hormone tests, antibody testing, and imaging may help identify the underlying cause.
Prevention
Fungal Pneumonia
Prevention depends on the fungus and the person's risk. Avoiding heavy exposure to environments containing fungal spores, particularly soil or material contaminated with bird or bat droppings, may reduce the risk of some infections. People with weakened immune systems should follow healthcare guidance about reducing exposure to environmental fungi.
Addison Disease
Addison disease cannot always be prevented because autoimmune and other underlying causes may not be avoidable. Early recognition of symptoms and appropriate medical evaluation can help identify adrenal hormone deficiency before serious complications develop. People with known adrenal insufficiency should follow prescribed treatment and medical advice to reduce the risk of severe hormone deficiency and related emergencies.
Risk Factors
Fungal Pneumonia
Risk varies according to the fungus involved. Important factors can include a weakened immune system, cancer treatment, organ or stem-cell transplantation, long-term corticosteroid or other immunosuppressive treatment, chronic lung disease, and exposure to environments containing disease-causing fungal spores. Geographic location and occupational or recreational exposure may also affect risk.
Addison Disease
Risk factors for Addison disease depend on the underlying cause. The autoimmune form is more likely in people who have other autoimmune conditions, including autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, vitiligo, pernicious anemia, or hypoparathyroidism. Other forms may be associated with infections, adrenal bleeding, tumors, or certain rare inherited conditions.
