Overview
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, nonrestorative sleep, difficulty concentrating, and increased sensitivity to sensory or physical stimuli. Symptoms can fluctuate over time and may be influenced by stress, sleep disruption, illness, or changes in activity. There is no single laboratory test that establishes the diagnosis. Evaluation generally focuses on the overall symptom pattern and helps exclude other conditions that can cause similar complaints.
Mumps
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the salivary glands, especially the parotid glands. It commonly causes painful swelling near the cheeks and jaw, fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and reduced appetite. Although many people recover without complications, mumps can occasionally affect the brain, reproductive organs, hearing, or other tissues.

InfectionDiagnosis
Fibromyalgia
There is no single laboratory or imaging test that confirms fibromyalgia. Diagnosis generally involves a detailed history and physical examination to identify widespread pain and associated symptoms and to assess how long they have been present. Clinicians may use established symptom criteria and may order selected blood tests to evaluate other possible causes of fatigue, pain, or sleep problems. The evaluation should consider coexisting conditions without assuming that every symptom is caused by fibromyalgia.
Mumps
Mumps is often diagnosed from characteristic symptoms, exposure history, vaccination status, and local outbreak information. Laboratory confirmation is recommended in many suspected cases and may involve molecular testing of a buccal or oral specimen. Blood testing can sometimes provide additional evidence. Other infections that cause swelling of the salivary glands may need to be considered when the presentation is atypical.
Prevention
Fibromyalgia
There is no established way to completely prevent fibromyalgia. Maintaining regular sleep habits, appropriate physical activity, gradual conditioning, stress-management strategies, and balanced daily routines may help support overall symptom control and physical function. Avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity and managing associated health conditions can also be useful. When persistent widespread pain, fatigue, or sleep problems develop, appropriate medical evaluation can help identify treatable conditions and establish a suitable management approach.
Mumps
The most effective prevention of mumps is vaccination with the recommended measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. Maintaining vaccination according to public-health recommendations reduces individual and community transmission. During outbreaks, avoiding close contact with infected people and following public-health isolation guidance can reduce spread. Good respiratory hygiene and staying away from others while contagious can also help limit transmission.
Risk Factors
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is more commonly reported in women and often begins during adulthood, although it can affect people of any sex or age. A family history may increase susceptibility. Physical trauma, surgery, infection, prolonged stress, sleep disturbance, and other significant physical or psychological stressors may precede symptom onset in some individuals. Having another chronic pain condition or certain rheumatic disorders may also be associated with increased likelihood of developing widespread pain.
Mumps
The main risk factor for mumps is lack of immunity to the virus. People who have not received recommended vaccination or who have not developed immunity after vaccination are more susceptible. Close contact in households, schools, colleges, healthcare settings, and other crowded environments can increase transmission. Outbreaks are more likely where vaccination coverage is low or exposure to infected people occurs.
