Diagnosis

Fibromyalgia
There is no single laboratory or imaging test that confirms fibromyalgia. Diagnosis generally involves a detailed history and physical examination to identify widespread pain and associated symptoms and to assess how long they have been present. Clinicians may use established symptom criteria and may order selected blood tests to evaluate other possible causes of fatigue, pain, or sleep problems. The evaluation should consider coexisting conditions without assuming that every symptom is caused by fibromyalgia.
Anal Fistula
An anal fistula is diagnosed through a medical history and examination of the anus and surrounding skin. The healthcare professional may look for an external opening, drainage, swelling, or tenderness. A digital rectal examination may help identify the tract. Imaging such as MRI or ultrasound may be used when the fistula is complex, recurrent, or difficult to identify during examination.

There is no established way to completely prevent fibromyalgia. Preventing anal fistula mainly involves reducing the risk of anal abscesses and treating infections promptly. People with inflammatory bowel disease should follow appropriate medical treatment and monitoring. Persistent pain, swelling, drainage, or recurrent abscesses around the anus should be evaluated by a healthcare professional rather than left untreated.

Risk Factors

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is more commonly reported in women and often begins during adulthood, although it can affect people of any sex or age. A family history may increase susceptibility. Physical trauma, surgery, infection, prolonged stress, sleep disturbance, and other significant physical or psychological stressors may precede symptom onset in some individuals. Having another chronic pain condition or certain rheumatic disorders may also be associated with increased likelihood of developing widespread pain.
Anal Fistula
Risk factors include a previous anal abscess, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn disease, recurrent infections in the anal region, previous anal or rectal surgery, and conditions that interfere with normal healing or immunity. A history of an anal fistula also increases the likelihood of recurrence.
