Overview

Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells. It is commonly associated with metabolic conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes, although alcohol and other causes can also lead to fatty liver. Many people have no symptoms, while some develop fatigue or discomfort in the upper right abdomen. Persistent liver inflammation can lead to scarring.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with differences in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive, or unusually focused patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. The characteristics and degree of support needed vary widely between individuals. Some people may also have differences in sensory processing, learning, language, attention, or motor development. Autism begins during early development, although recognition may occur later when social or functional demands increase.

Diagnosis

Fatty Liver Disease
Diagnosis may begin with medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging. Liver enzymes and other laboratory tests can help identify liver injury but cannot by themselves determine the cause. Ultrasound and other imaging can detect liver fat. Additional testing may be needed to assess fibrosis, exclude other liver diseases, or determine whether inflammation or advanced scarring is present.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Diagnosis involves a developmental assessment focused on social communication, interaction, repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, sensory characteristics, and the way these features affect daily functioning. Clinicians may gather information from caregivers, teachers, or other people familiar with the individual’s development. Developmental history is important because characteristics begin early in life, although they may become more noticeable later. Hearing, language, cognitive, neurological, and other developmental factors may also be assessed.

Prevention

Fatty Liver Disease
Maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and good control of blood glucose and blood lipids can reduce the risk of metabolic fatty liver disease. Limiting or avoiding excessive alcohol can reduce alcohol-related liver injury. Medicines and supplements should be used appropriately. People with metabolic risk factors may benefit from periodic medical assessment of liver health.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
There is no known method that can completely prevent autism spectrum disorder, and autism should not be viewed as a condition caused by parenting or ordinary childhood experiences. Appropriate prenatal care and management of maternal health are important for general developmental health. Early recognition of developmental differences allows timely access to educational, behavioral, communication, and other supports. Developmental surveillance during childhood can help identify children who may benefit from further assessment.

Risk Factors

Fatty Liver Disease
Risk factors include overweight or obesity, increased abdominal fat, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels, metabolic syndrome, and physical inactivity. Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for alcohol-related fatty liver disease. Certain medicines, rapid weight loss, and some inherited or endocrine conditions can also increase risk.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder can occur in people with or without identifiable risk factors. Genetic susceptibility and certain developmental or biological factors are associated with increased likelihood. A family history of autism or certain genetic conditions may be relevant. Some prenatal or early developmental circumstances have been associated with increased risk, although associations vary and do not establish a direct cause. Autism occurs across all socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic groups.
