Overview

Epididymitis
Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm from the testicle toward the vas deferens. It commonly causes pain and swelling in the scrotum and may also cause urinary symptoms or fever. Infection is the most common cause, although medicines and other conditions can occasionally contribute.
Chronic Diarrhea
Chronic diarrhea means frequent loose or watery stools that continue for several weeks or longer. It can have many causes, including digestive disorders, infections, medicines, food intolerances, and conditions affecting how the intestine absorbs or processes nutrients.

Diagnosis

Epididymitis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and physical examination, including assessment of the scrotum and testicles. Urine and blood tests may be used to identify infection, and testing for sexually transmitted infections may be appropriate. Ultrasound may be used when necessary, particularly to help distinguish epididymitis from other causes of acute scrotal pain.
Chronic Diarrhea
Diagnosis of chronic diarrhea begins with a detailed history of the duration, frequency, appearance, and triggers of bowel movements, together with a physical examination. Healthcare providers may use blood tests, stool studies, tests for infection or inflammation, and other investigations depending on the suspected cause. Additional testing such as imaging, endoscopy, or specialized tests may be required when symptoms persist or an underlying intestinal disorder is suspected.

Prevention

Epididymitis
Safer sexual practices, including appropriate condom use, can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections that cause epididymitis. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of urinary or sexually transmitted infections can reduce complications. People with urinary tract abnormalities or recurrent infections should follow appropriate medical management and seek evaluation for persistent urinary or scrotal symptoms.
Chronic Diarrhea
Prevention depends on the underlying cause. Good hand hygiene, safe food preparation, and drinking safe water can reduce infectious causes. Avoiding foods that consistently trigger symptoms and using medicines only as directed can help prevent some episodes. People with chronic gastrointestinal disorders should follow their treatment plan and seek medical advice for persistent diarrhea, dehydration, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or other concerning symptoms.

Risk Factors

Epididymitis
Risk increases with unprotected sexual activity and sexually transmitted infections, urinary tract infections, prostate or urinary tract abnormalities, recent urinary procedures, and regular use of a urinary catheter. Previous urinary tract surgery or structural problems may also increase risk.
Chronic Diarrhea
Risk factors depend on the underlying cause. They may include exposure to contaminated food or water, use of medicines that can cause diarrhea, food intolerance, inflammatory or other chronic gastrointestinal disorders, and previous digestive tract surgery. A history of recurrent intestinal symptoms or diseases affecting nutrient absorption may also increase the likelihood of persistent diarrhea.
