Overview
Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the main cavity of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. Because these tissues cannot support a normally developing pregnancy, an ectopic pregnancy can cause serious internal bleeding if the pregnancy continues to grow and the affected structure ruptures. Symptoms may include a missed menstrual period, pelvic or abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder pain. Some ectopic pregnancies are detected before severe symptoms develop, making early evaluation important when pregnancy occurs with unusual pain or bleeding.
Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis is swelling of a kidney caused by urine building up because its normal drainage is blocked or impaired. It may affect one or both kidneys and can result from conditions such as kidney stones, narrowing of the urinary tract, an enlarged prostate, tumors, or urinary reflux. The condition may cause pain, urinary symptoms, infection, or reduced kidney function when severe or prolonged.

Diagnosis
Ectopic Pregnancy
Diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy usually involves a pregnancy test together with clinical assessment, blood testing for the pregnancy hormone hCG, and transvaginal ultrasound. The pattern of hCG levels over time can provide useful information but does not by itself establish the location of a pregnancy. Ultrasound may identify a pregnancy inside the uterus or findings suggesting an ectopic pregnancy. When the diagnosis remains uncertain, repeat testing and imaging may be required. Severe pain, fainting, or signs of internal bleeding require urgent medical assessment.
Hydronephrosis
Diagnosis of hydronephrosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and imaging to identify kidney swelling and determine its cause. Ultrasound is commonly used to visualize the kidneys and urinary tract. CT or other imaging may be needed to identify stones, tumors, or obstruction. Blood and urine tests can help assess kidney function and identify infection or other urinary abnormalities.
Prevention
Ectopic Pregnancy
There is no guaranteed way to prevent every ectopic pregnancy, but reducing the risk of pelvic infections, avoiding tobacco, and seeking appropriate care for sexually transmitted infections can help reduce some contributing factors. People with a previous ectopic pregnancy or conditions affecting the fallopian tubes may benefit from early medical evaluation when pregnancy occurs. Early confirmation of pregnancy location is particularly important when risk factors are present or when pain or bleeding develops. Any pregnancy accompanied by severe abdominal pain, fainting, or significant bleeding requires urgent assessment.
Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis itself is not always preventable because it can result from structural or medical conditions that cannot be avoided. Prompt evaluation of urinary symptoms, kidney stones, recurrent urinary infections, or difficulty passing urine may help identify obstruction early. Appropriate treatment of conditions that interfere with urinary flow can help protect kidney function.
Risk Factors
Ectopic Pregnancy
Risk factors for ectopic pregnancy include a previous ectopic pregnancy, previous pelvic inflammatory disease, damage or surgery involving the fallopian tubes, certain fertility treatments, and some conditions affecting the reproductive tract. Pregnancy occurring with an intrauterine device in place is uncommon, but if pregnancy does occur, the relative likelihood of it being ectopic is higher. Smoking and increasing maternal age have also been associated with increased risk. An ectopic pregnancy can still occur without any recognized risk factor.
Hydronephrosis
Risk depends on the cause of urinary obstruction. Kidney stones, urinary tract abnormalities, enlarged prostate, tumors, blood clots, urinary tract infections, and conditions that cause urine to flow backward toward the kidneys can increase risk. Hydronephrosis may also occur during pregnancy or in infants with developmental abnormalities of the urinary tract.
