Overview

Delusional Disorder
Delusional disorder is a mental health condition characterized by one or more firmly held false beliefs that persist for at least one month. The beliefs may concern subjects such as persecution, jealousy, relationships, or physical health. Unlike some other psychotic disorders, prominent hallucinations, disorganized speech, and other major psychotic symptoms are not typical features of the disorder.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily causes inflammation of the joints. The immune system mistakenly attacks tissues around the joints, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced movement. It often affects the hands, wrists and feet symmetrically, but can involve other joints and organs. Persistent inflammation can damage joints and affect overall health.

Diagnosis

Delusional Disorder
Diagnosis requires a comprehensive psychiatric assessment and review of the person's history and symptoms. A healthcare professional evaluates the nature and duration of the beliefs and assesses whether other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, substance use, neurological conditions, or other medical causes could explain the symptoms.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical examination, blood tests and imaging. Blood tests may measure rheumatoid factor and anti-CCP antibodies and assess inflammation. X-rays, ultrasound or MRI can show joint inflammation or damage. No single test confirms rheumatoid arthritis in every person, so the overall clinical picture is considered.

Prevention

Delusional Disorder
There is no established method for reliably preventing delusional disorder. Early evaluation of persistent or unusual beliefs, particularly when they cause significant distress, conflict, or changes in behavior, can help identify possible mental health or medical causes and connect the person with appropriate professional care.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis cannot always be prevented because genetic and immune factors contribute to its development. Avoiding tobacco use is an important way to reduce risk. Maintaining a healthy weight and addressing other modifiable health factors may also be beneficial. Early medical evaluation of persistent joint swelling and stiffness allows appropriate treatment to begin before significant joint damage develops.

Risk Factors

Delusional Disorder
The factors associated with delusional disorder are not completely understood. It generally develops in adulthood and may occur more often in middle-aged or older adults. A history of certain personality traits or other psychiatric or medical conditions may be relevant, but no single factor reliably predicts who will develop the disorder.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Risk factors include having certain genetic traits, being female, increasing age and having a family history of rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking is an important modifiable risk factor. Obesity and some environmental exposures may also contribute. The disease can occur in people without any known risk factor.
