Overview

Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease refers to changes in the spinal discs that occur as they lose water, flexibility, and structural strength over time. These changes can sometimes cause back or neck pain, stiffness, or other symptoms. Disc degeneration can occur with aging and may also be influenced by injury or repeated stress. Degenerative disc disease does not necessarily cause symptoms, and disc changes seen on imaging are common as people age. When symptoms occur, they may include localized back or neck pain, stiffness, or pain that extends into an arm or leg when nearby nerves are affected. Symptoms can fluctuate over time.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder that causes skin cells to build up more rapidly than normal, producing areas of thickened, inflamed, scaly, or itchy skin. It can affect different parts of the body and may also involve the nails or joints. Symptoms often occur in episodes called flares, with periods when the condition becomes less active.

Diagnosis

Degenerative Disc Disease
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination. Imaging such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging may show disc-space narrowing, changes in the discs, or other spinal abnormalities. Imaging findings do not always correspond directly to the severity of pain. Imaging findings can include disc-space narrowing, changes in disc shape, bone spurs, or other degenerative changes. MRI can provide more information about discs and nerves when neurological symptoms are present. A careful clinical examination remains important because degenerative findings may occur even in people without significant pain.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is usually diagnosed clinically from the appearance and distribution of the skin lesions together with the medical history. A healthcare professional examines areas of affected skin and may ask about symptoms, previous episodes, family history, and possible triggers. A skin biopsy may sometimes be performed when the diagnosis is uncertain or another skin condition needs to be excluded.

Prevention

Degenerative Disc Disease
Disc degeneration cannot always be prevented because aging is a major contributor. Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, using safe lifting techniques, avoiding smoking, and protecting the back from repeated injury may help reduce strain on the spine. Regular strengthening and flexibility exercises can support the muscles surrounding the spine. Proper lifting technique, ergonomic work practices, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco can reduce modifiable stress on spinal structures. People with recurring symptoms should address contributing physical activities rather than repeatedly working through severe pain.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis cannot always be prevented because genetic and immune factors play an important role. Avoiding known personal triggers may help reduce flares. Protecting the skin from injury, managing stress, avoiding smoking, following prescribed treatment, and maintaining overall health may help control symptoms. Regular medical care can also help identify and manage associated problems.

Risk Factors

Degenerative Disc Disease
Risk increases with aging, repeated spinal stress, physically demanding work, heavy lifting, previous spinal injury, smoking, and excess body weight. Certain activities or occupations that place repeated strain on the spine may accelerate disc degeneration. Risk may be greater with advancing age and repeated loading of the spine. Heavy physical work, repetitive bending or lifting, prolonged vibration, previous spinal trauma, smoking, and excess body weight can contribute. Genetic differences may also influence how quickly discs undergo degenerative changes.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis can occur in anyone, but susceptibility is greater when there is a family history of the condition. Factors that may trigger or worsen flares include infections such as strep throat, injury or irritation of the skin, stress, smoking, certain medicines, and extremes of sun exposure. A weakened immune system may also be associated with more severe disease in some people.
