Overview

Crohn Disease
Crohn disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can cause inflammation anywhere along the digestive tract, although the small intestine and beginning of the large intestine are commonly affected. Symptoms may include persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, reduced appetite, and sometimes fever. The disease can alternate between periods of active symptoms and remission. Inflammation may extend through the bowel wall and lead to complications such as narrowing, fistulas, abscesses, or nutritional deficiencies.
Avian Influenza
Avian influenza is an infection caused by influenza A viruses that primarily affect birds but can occasionally infect humans and other animals. Human infections are uncommon but can sometimes cause severe respiratory illness. Most human infections occur after close or prolonged contact with infected birds, animals, or contaminated environments.

Diagnosis

Crohn Disease
Crohn disease is diagnosed using a combination of medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, stool testing, endoscopy, and imaging. Blood tests may identify anemia or inflammation, while stool tests can help assess intestinal inflammation and exclude infections. Colonoscopy with examination of the terminal ileum and biopsy is commonly important. Cross-sectional imaging such as MRI or CT enterography may evaluate the small intestine and complications. No single test establishes Crohn disease in every patient.
Avian Influenza
Diagnosis of avian influenza requires laboratory testing because symptoms can resemble other respiratory infections. Testing may involve molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction on respiratory specimens. A detailed history of contact with birds, animals, contaminated environments, and relevant travel or outbreak exposure is important when evaluating possible infection.

Prevention

Crohn Disease
There is no guaranteed way to prevent Crohn disease because its causes are complex and include genetic and immune factors. Not smoking is particularly important because smoking can increase disease activity and complications. People with Crohn disease can reduce complications through regular medical follow-up, appropriate treatment, nutritional support, and monitoring for deficiencies. Individual food triggers can be identified with professional guidance. Vaccination and preventive health care are also important for people receiving medicines that affect the immune system.
Avian Influenza
Reducing contact with sick or dead birds and animals, avoiding contaminated environments, using appropriate protective equipment when exposure cannot be avoided, and practicing good hand hygiene can reduce risk. People working with poultry or infected animals should follow public-health and occupational infection-control guidance.

Risk Factors

Crohn Disease
Risk factors for Crohn disease include a family history of inflammatory bowel disease, certain genetic factors, smoking, and some environmental influences. The disease can occur at any age but is often diagnosed in adolescents and young adults. People with certain immune-related conditions may have increased susceptibility. Smoking is particularly important because it can increase disease activity and complications. Diet does not directly cause Crohn disease, although individual foods may worsen symptoms during active disease.
Avian Influenza
Risk is mainly associated with close or prolonged contact with infected birds or animals, contaminated environments, or surfaces containing infectious material. People working with poultry or other potentially infected animals may have greater exposure. Risk can vary according to the circulating virus and local animal infections.
