Overview

Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is inflammation of the skin that develops after contact with an irritating substance or an allergen. It may cause redness, itching, soreness, swelling, dryness, cracking, or a rash. Irritant contact dermatitis results from direct skin damage, while allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the immune system reacts to a particular substance.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the prostate gland, a small gland in the male reproductive system. It is one of the most common cancers affecting men. Some prostate cancers grow slowly and may cause few symptoms initially, while others can be more aggressive. Symptoms, when present, may include urinary changes, difficulty urinating, or blood in the urine or semen, although these findings can also have other causes.

Diagnosis

Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is usually diagnosed from the appearance and distribution of the rash, symptoms, medical history, and possible exposure to irritants or allergens. The clinician may examine whether the rash corresponds to areas of contact. Patch testing can help identify an allergic trigger when allergic contact dermatitis is suspected or symptoms continue despite avoiding obvious exposures.
Prostate Cancer
Evaluation for prostate cancer may include a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal examination. If findings are concerning, imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to assess the prostate. A prostate biopsy is used to obtain tissue for microscopic examination and establish a diagnosis. Additional imaging or laboratory tests may be performed to determine the extent of disease when cancer is confirmed.

Prevention

Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis can often be prevented by identifying and avoiding substances that irritate the skin or trigger an allergy. Use protective gloves or other appropriate barriers when exposure cannot be avoided, and follow safe handling practices for chemicals and cleaning products. Gentle skin care and regular use of suitable moisturizers can help protect the skin barrier and reduce irritation.
Prostate Cancer
There is no guaranteed way to prevent prostate cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco can support overall health. Men should discuss prostate cancer risk and appropriate screening with their healthcare professional, particularly when they have a family history or other risk factors. Awareness of urinary or other persistent symptoms can also support timely medical evaluation.

Risk Factors

Contact Dermatitis
Risk of contact dermatitis increases with repeated exposure to irritants or allergens, especially when the skin barrier is frequently damaged. People working with chemicals, detergents, solvents, metals, cosmetics, hair products, plants, or wet materials may have greater exposure. A history of atopic dermatitis can also increase susceptibility to irritant dermatitis.
Prostate Cancer
Older age is an important risk factor for prostate cancer. Having a close family history of prostate cancer can increase risk, particularly when certain inherited genetic changes are present. Some genetic factors may substantially increase susceptibility. Obesity and other health factors have also been associated with prostate cancer risk or with more advanced disease. Individual risk varies, and having a risk factor does not mean that cancer will develop.
