Overview

Carbuncle
A carbuncle is a group of interconnected boils caused by a deeper bacterial infection of the skin and tissues around several hair follicles. The area is usually painful, swollen, red, and filled with pus, and several openings may develop as the infection drains. Carbuncles commonly occur on the back, neck, thighs, or other areas where friction and sweating may occur.
Urethritis
Urethritis is inflammation and irritation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the body. It may cause burning or pain during urination, urinary urgency or frequency, discharge, itching, or discomfort around the genital area. Urethritis can affect both men and women and may be caused by infections or by noninfectious irritation. Identifying the cause is important because untreated infectious urethritis can lead to complications and may be transmitted to sexual partners.

Diagnosis

Carbuncle
Diagnosis is usually based on the appearance of the affected skin and the symptoms. A healthcare professional may examine the size, depth, drainage, and surrounding redness of the infection. A sample of pus may be collected for bacterial culture when the infection is severe, recurrent, unusually located, or not responding to initial treatment. Additional assessment may be needed when an underlying condition such as diabetes is suspected.
Urethritis
Diagnosis involves a medical history, physical examination, and testing to identify infection or another cause of inflammation. Depending on the symptoms, healthcare professionals may examine the genital and abdominal areas and assess for discharge or tenderness. Urinalysis and urine cultures may be performed, along with specific tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and other sexually transmitted infections. A urethral swab or additional investigations may be used when clinically appropriate.

Prevention

Carbuncle
Good skin hygiene can help reduce the spread of bacteria that cause carbuncles. Keep wounds clean and covered, wash hands regularly, and avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or other personal items with someone who has a skin infection. Managing diabetes and other chronic conditions can also reduce susceptibility. Recurrent infections should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to identify contributing factors.
Urethritis
Prevention of infectious urethritis includes reducing exposure to sexually transmitted infections through safer sexual practices, appropriate barrier protection, and testing when exposure or symptoms occur. Prompt evaluation of urinary or genital symptoms can help identify infections before complications develop. When urethritis is caused by an infection, appropriate evaluation and treatment of sexual partners may help prevent reinfection. Avoiding known chemical irritants or sources of urethral injury may help prevent noninfectious forms.

Risk Factors

Carbuncle
Diabetes and other conditions that weaken the immune system can increase the risk of developing carbuncles. Poor skin hygiene, repeated friction, sweating, and skin injuries may also contribute. People living in crowded conditions or those who have close contact with someone carrying the bacteria may have greater exposure. A history of recurrent skin infections can also increase susceptibility.
Urethritis
Risk factors include a history of sexually transmitted infections, having multiple sexual partners, and sexual activity that increases exposure to infectious organisms. Urethritis can also occur after irritation or injury to the urethra. Some infections may occur more frequently in particular age or sex groups. Previous urethritis or other genitourinary infections may also be relevant. Appropriate sexual health practices can reduce exposure to infectious causes.
