Overview
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a long-term lung condition in which the airways become permanently widened and damaged. Damaged airways do not clear mucus normally, allowing mucus and bacteria to accumulate and causing repeated lung infections. Symptoms may include a persistent cough, large amounts of mucus or phlegm, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest discomfort, fatigue, and repeated respiratory infections.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, commonly called pink eye, is inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye and lining the inside of the eyelids. It may cause redness, watering, irritation, itching, discharge, or discomfort. Conjunctivitis can result from viruses, bacteria, allergies, dry eyes, or exposure to irritating substances.

Diagnosis
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is evaluated using symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination. A chest CT scan is commonly used because it can show widening and structural damage of the airways. Lung function tests can measure breathing ability. Sputum may be tested to identify bacteria or other organisms causing infection. Additional blood tests may be used to look for an underlying cause.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is usually diagnosed from the eye symptoms and an examination of the eyes. The healthcare provider looks for redness, swelling, discharge, irritation, and other changes in the conjunctiva. The medical history helps distinguish infectious, allergic, and irritant causes. In some cases, especially when symptoms are severe, persistent, recurrent, or unusual, additional testing may be needed to identify an infectious cause or another eye disorder.
Prevention
Bronchiectasis
Preventing respiratory infections and treating them promptly can help reduce lung damage that may lead to bronchiectasis. Recommended vaccinations, including those against influenza and pneumococcal disease, can help protect against important infections. Avoiding tobacco smoke and other lung irritants is important. People with an underlying condition should follow treatment plans designed to maintain airway clearance and reduce infections.
Conjunctivitis
Good hand hygiene can reduce the spread of infectious conjunctivitis. Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes and do not share towels, cosmetics, eye drops, or other personal items that contact the eyes. Clean hands should be used when applying eye medicines or contact lenses. People with symptoms should follow medical advice about limiting close contact and preventing transmission. Avoiding known allergens and eye irritants can help prevent allergic or irritant conjunctivitis.
Risk Factors
Bronchiectasis
Risk factors for bronchiectasis include previous severe or repeated respiratory infections, cystic fibrosis, immune-system problems, inflammatory diseases, and conditions that interfere with airway clearance. Risk may also increase with certain structural lung abnormalities and long-term exposure to irritants. Older age can be associated with increased risk, particularly when other lung or immune conditions are present.
Conjunctivitis
Risk depends on the type of conjunctivitis. Close contact with a person who has viral or bacterial conjunctivitis increases the chance of infection. Children in group settings may be exposed more easily. Allergies, exposure to pollen or other allergens, dry eyes, and contact with irritating substances can increase the risk of noninfectious conjunctivitis. Newborns can develop serious eye infections from bacteria acquired during childbirth.
