Overview
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by episodes of unusually elevated or irritable mood and episodes of depression. Mood episodes can affect energy, sleep, activity, concentration, judgment, and daily functioning. The pattern and severity vary between individuals, and periods of relatively stable mood may occur between episodes. Bipolar disorder includes different forms, including bipolar I and bipolar II. Accurate diagnosis is important because symptoms can overlap with other mental health conditions.
Ankle Sprain
Ankle sprain is an injury in which one or more ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn. It commonly occurs when the foot twists inward, producing an inversion injury that affects the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. Sprains range from mild stretching to complete ligament tears. Typical symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and difficulty bearing weight. Recovery varies with severity, and some severe injuries may require immobilization or further treatment.

Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is diagnosed through a comprehensive psychiatric assessment that reviews current symptoms, previous mood episodes, duration and severity of changes, sleep, energy, behavior, functioning, substance use, and medical history. Information from family members may sometimes help clarify past episodes. There is no blood test or brain scan that independently confirms bipolar disorder. Clinicians also evaluate for conditions such as major depression, substance-induced symptoms, anxiety disorders, and other causes of mood changes.
Ankle Sprain
Diagnosis is usually based on the injury mechanism, symptoms, and physical examination. The clinician checks swelling, bruising, tenderness, range of motion, joint stability, and the ability to bear weight. X-rays may be needed when a fracture is suspected. MRI or other imaging may be considered when a significant ligament injury, persistent symptoms, or another structural problem is suspected. The severity of the sprain is assessed to guide protection, rehabilitation, and return to activity.
Prevention
Bipolar Disorder
There is no guaranteed way to prevent bipolar disorder because genetic and biological factors contribute substantially. Maintaining regular sleep, avoiding substance misuse, managing stress, and obtaining early professional help for significant mood changes may help reduce triggers or complications in people who are vulnerable. People already diagnosed should follow their treatment plan and seek help if warning signs of a mood episode appear. Support from family, mental health professionals, and a stable daily routine can also be useful.
Ankle Sprain
Proper footwear and gradual conditioning can reduce the likelihood of ankle sprains. Warming up before sports, strengthening the muscles around the ankle, and improving balance and coordination can improve joint control. Activities should be increased progressively rather than suddenly. After an ankle injury, completing rehabilitation and restoring strength and stability before returning to demanding sports can reduce recurrence. People with repeated sprains may benefit from additional support such as bracing when recommended by a healthcare professional.
Risk Factors
Bipolar Disorder
Risk factors for bipolar disorder include a family history of bipolar disorder or other mood disorders, genetic susceptibility, and certain environmental or psychological stresses. Major disruptions in sleep can affect people who are vulnerable to mood episodes. Substance use may worsen symptoms or complicate the course. The disorder can begin during adolescence or adulthood, although onset can occur at other ages. Having a risk factor does not mean that bipolar disorder will necessarily develop.
Ankle Sprain
Risk factors include sports and activities involving running, jumping, rapid changes of direction, or uneven surfaces. Previous ankle sprains can increase the risk of another injury when strength and stability have not fully recovered. Poorly fitting footwear, inadequate conditioning, and returning to demanding activity before rehabilitation is complete may also increase risk. Reduced ankle strength, balance, or flexibility can make it harder to control the joint during sudden movements.
