Overview

Bed Sores
Bed sores, also called pressure injuries or pressure ulcers, are areas of skin and underlying tissue damage caused by prolonged pressure or pressure combined with friction and shear. They commonly develop over bony areas such as the heels, hips, tailbone, elbows, and back of the head. Early pressure injuries may cause persistent redness or discoloration, while more severe injuries can involve deeper tissue and become complicated by infection.
Endometrial Cancer
Endometrial cancer is a cancer that begins in the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. It is one of the most common cancers of the female reproductive system. Abnormal cells can grow uncontrollably and may invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Abnormal vaginal bleeding, particularly bleeding after menopause, is an important symptom that should be evaluated.

Diagnosis

Bed Sores
Diagnosis is usually made by examining the skin and underlying tissues and determining the location, appearance, extent, and severity of the injury. Pressure injuries are classified according to the depth and characteristics of tissue damage. Healthcare professionals may assess nutrition, circulation, sensation, mobility, and other contributing factors. Laboratory tests, imaging, or other investigations may be required when infection, bone involvement, or deeper tissue damage is suspected.
Endometrial Cancer
Diagnosis usually begins with evaluation of abnormal vaginal bleeding or other symptoms and a pelvic examination. Transvaginal ultrasound may be used to assess the thickness and appearance of the endometrium. A definitive diagnosis generally requires sampling the uterine lining, usually with an endometrial biopsy. Hysteroscopy or dilation and curettage may be used when additional tissue evaluation is needed. Imaging can help determine whether cancer has spread.

Prevention

Bed Sores
Regular repositioning and reducing prolonged pressure are central to preventing pressure injuries. Pressure-relieving mattresses, cushions, and other support surfaces may help people at increased risk. Skin should be inspected regularly, kept clean and dry, and protected from excessive moisture. Adequate nutrition and hydration, maintaining mobility when possible, and using appropriate techniques when moving or transferring a person can further reduce injury risk.
Endometrial Cancer
Endometrial cancer cannot always be prevented, but maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, and managing conditions such as diabetes may reduce risk. Hormone therapy should be used according to medical advice, with appropriate consideration of whether estrogen is given with progesterone. People with Lynch syndrome or a strong family history should discuss appropriate risk assessment and screening or preventive options with a healthcare professional.

Risk Factors

Bed Sores
Risk factors include limited mobility, prolonged bed or wheelchair use, older age, reduced sensation, paralysis, poor nutrition, dehydration, urinary or fecal incontinence, impaired circulation, and medical conditions that interfere with healing. People who cannot reposition themselves independently or who remain in the same position for prolonged periods are particularly vulnerable.
Endometrial Cancer
Risk factors include increasing age, obesity, prolonged estrogen exposure, early menstruation, late menopause, never having been pregnant, certain hormone therapies, diabetes, and a family history of endometrial or colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome and some other inherited genetic conditions can substantially increase risk. Risk varies among individuals and may depend on the combination of hormonal, metabolic, and genetic factors.
