Overview

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with differences in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive, or unusually focused patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. The characteristics and degree of support needed vary widely between individuals. Some people may also have differences in sensory processing, learning, language, attention, or motor development. Autism begins during early development, although recognition may occur later when social or functional demands increase.
Avascular Necrosis
Avascular necrosis, also called osteonecrosis, occurs when reduced blood supply causes bone tissue to die. It most often affects the hip but can involve other joints such as the knee, shoulder, or ankle. Early disease may cause no symptoms, while progressive damage can produce persistent pain, stiffness, reduced movement, and eventually collapse of the affected bone or joint surface. The condition may develop gradually and can be associated with injury, certain medicines, medical conditions, or other factors that impair blood flow to bone.

Diagnosis

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Diagnosis involves a developmental assessment focused on social communication, interaction, repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, sensory characteristics, and the way these features affect daily functioning. Clinicians may gather information from caregivers, teachers, or other people familiar with the individual’s development. Developmental history is important because characteristics begin early in life, although they may become more noticeable later. Hearing, language, cognitive, neurological, and other developmental factors may also be assessed.
Avascular Necrosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical examination, medical history, and imaging of the affected bone. X-rays may appear normal in early disease, while magnetic resonance imaging can detect changes at an earlier stage. Additional imaging may help determine the extent of bone damage or joint collapse. Blood tests and other investigations may be used to identify an underlying condition or contributing cause, particularly when disease occurs at an unusual age or without an obvious risk factor.

Prevention

Autism Spectrum Disorder
There is no known method that can completely prevent autism spectrum disorder, and autism should not be viewed as a condition caused by parenting or ordinary childhood experiences. Appropriate prenatal care and management of maternal health are important for general developmental health. Early recognition of developmental differences allows timely access to educational, behavioral, communication, and other supports. Developmental surveillance during childhood can help identify children who may benefit from further assessment.
Avascular Necrosis
Some cases of avascular necrosis cannot be prevented, particularly when an underlying medical condition is responsible. Risk may be reduced by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, using corticosteroids only as medically indicated, and discussing long-term corticosteroid exposure with a healthcare professional. Prompt assessment after significant joint or bone injury may be appropriate. People with medical disorders associated with osteonecrosis may benefit from appropriate management and monitoring for complications.

Risk Factors

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder can occur in people with or without identifiable risk factors. Genetic susceptibility and certain developmental or biological factors are associated with increased likelihood. A family history of autism or certain genetic conditions may be relevant. Some prenatal or early developmental circumstances have been associated with increased risk, although associations vary and do not establish a direct cause. Autism occurs across all socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic groups.
Avascular Necrosis
Risk factors include prolonged or high-dose corticosteroid use, heavy alcohol consumption, previous fractures or joint trauma, and certain medical conditions affecting blood vessels or blood clotting. Associations have also been reported with disorders such as sickle cell disease, lupus, certain metabolic disorders, and some organ-transplant or cancer-related conditions. The risk varies according to the underlying cause, duration of exposure, and the location and extent of impaired blood supply.
