Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a serious lung condition in which widespread inflammation and fluid buildup in the lungs make it difficult for oxygen to pass into the blood. It can develop rapidly after severe illness or injury and may cause severe breathing difficulty and low blood oxygen levels.
Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is a group of symptoms affecting the nose and often the eyes after exposure to substances that trigger an allergic response. Common triggers include pollen, dust, mold and animal dander. Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, is often caused by pollen from trees, grasses or ragweed. Symptoms can include sneezing, itching, runny or stuffy nose, watery eyes, reduced sense of smell and throat irritation.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Diagnosis of ARDS is based on severe breathing difficulty, low blood oxygen levels, clinical history, physical examination, and chest imaging. Chest X-rays or other imaging may show widespread lung abnormalities. Healthcare professionals also evaluate the underlying illness and exclude other causes of lung fluid or respiratory failure.
Allergic Rhinitis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, medical history and physical examination. The healthcare provider may ask when symptoms occur, whether they vary by season and whether they are associated with exposure to pets, dust or other allergens. Allergy testing can identify specific triggers. Skin testing is commonly used, while blood tests measuring allergy-related antibodies may be used when skin testing is not appropriate. An eosinophil count may also provide supporting information in some cases.
Prevention

ARDS cannot always be prevented because it can result from severe illness or injury. Prompt treatment of serious infections, careful management of conditions that can lead to severe lung injury, avoiding aspiration when possible, and appropriate medical care after major trauma may reduce risk or severity. During pollen season, people with hay fever may benefit from staying indoors when pollen levels are high, keeping windows closed and using air conditioning when possible. Risk is increased by conditions that can severely injure or inflame the lungs, including sepsis, severe pneumonia, major trauma, aspiration, and other serious illnesses. The likelihood of ARDS is also influenced by the severity of the underlying condition and the extent of systemic inflammation.
Allergic Rhinitis
Risk factors include a personal or family history of allergies, repeated exposure to pollen, dust mites, mold or animal dander, and living or working in environments where these allergens are common. Seasonal exposure is particularly important for hay fever. The amount of pollen in the air can influence symptoms, with higher pollen levels often occurring on hot, dry and windy days. People with other allergic conditions may also be more likely to develop allergic rhinitis.
